A Tutorial Review on Sporadic E Layers

2011
The sporadic E layers (Es) form in the dynamo region of the ionosphere when metallic ions of meteoric origin are converged vertically in a wind shear. This paper provides a comprehensive update on sporadic E, a topic that has been studied for many years.

56-Megacycle Reception via Sporadic-E-Layer Reflections

Proceedings of the IRE, 1939
A theory that 56-megacycle transmission at a distance of 400 to 1200 miles takes place via sporadic-E-layer reflections has been investigated by comparing numerous reports of such reception with ionosphere data provided by the National Bureau of Standards. Simultaneous transmission conditions on lower frequencies are also considered.

Lunar tides in the equatorial sporadic-E layer

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1965
Abstract A determination of the lunar tides in the sporadic E -layer is made, using data for nine years from Ibadan and seven years from Huancayo. The large amount of data makes possible separate analyses for seasonal effects and for the “luni-solar” tides.

The gradient instability in Gaussian sporadic E-layers

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1973
The stability of ionospheric layers is investigated. A bounded layer, represented mathematically by a Gaussian layer plus background, is adopted as a model ionization density. Such a model is a good representation of the ionospheric situation and allows an unambiguous interpretation of positive growths of the instability.

The equatorial sporadic-E layer and the electrojet

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1962
Abstract In this paper, an analysis is made of E s data from three chains of ionospheric stations near the magnetic equator in three different longitudes. Some of the stations were set up during the I.G.Y. period. The analysis shows that the electrojet as judged by the diurnal range of H , extends up to ±7° magnetic dip from the magnetic ...

The sporadicElayer at Kodaikanal

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1954
An examination of the ionospheric records at Kodaikanal, which is located almost on the geomagnetic equator, reveals that the sporadic E layer here has some regular features not observed at other latitudes. It occurs in nearly 93 per cent of the half-hourly records during the daytime.

Distribution function of the sporadic E-layer screening frequency

Radiophysics and Quantum Electronics, 1991
The distribution function of the sporadic E-layer screening frequency is derived using the techniques of mathematical statistics and the physical theory of sporadic E-layer formation. The function is compared to the empirical distribution functions known from literature. The best correlation of the obtained distribution and experimental data is shown.

Lunar tides in the sporadic E-layer at Ibadan

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1959
Abstract An analysis of the lunar semi-diurnal tides in fEs and h ' Es is made for Ibadan. The results are presented in the form of harmonic dials. Comparisons are made between these results and those of other stations.

Wave activity, F1-layer disturbance and a sporadic E-layer over EISCAT

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1989
Abstract During July 1987 the EISCAT radars were used to study thin layers in the ionospheric E -region. This paper outlines the observing campaign, describes the GEN-type radar program used for the UHF experiments, and discusses the ‘descending’ or ‘sequential’ layer observed on the afternoon of 12 July during a period of strong wave activity ...
