Climate adaptation and functional constraints drive pollen evolution in Apiales

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 5, Page 2574-2587, March 2026.
Summary Pollen grains exhibit remarkable morphological diversity, shaped by selective pressures from environmental factors and mechanical constraints. Here, we investigate macroevolutionary patterns of pollen morphology in Apiales, an order of angiosperms with significant ecological and geographical diversity, to disentangle the roles of climate and ...

Transfer cells in Horneophyton lignieri illuminate the origin of vascular tissues in land plants

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 249, Issue 6, Page 3149-3164, March 2026.
Summary Recent fossil discoveries and advances in plant phylogeny have renewed debate about the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of land plants and the evolution of its fundamental organs and tissues. We re‐investigate the vascular system of Horneophyton lignieri, an exceptionally preserved Rhynie Chert fossil central to understanding early plant ...

Porphyrin‐Linked Antifungal Nanocarrier Promotes Plant Growth via UV RESISTANCE LOCUS 8‐Mediated Light Signalling Activation

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 3, Page 1518-1532, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Nanocarriers can improve pesticide delivery efficiency and reduce phytotoxicity, thereby supporting sustainable strategies for crop protection. Given this potential, it is essential to investigate their effects on crop physiology and development.

Population Structure of Phytophthora infestans in Poland Is Affected by Sexual Recombination and Transport of Infected Potato Seed Tubers

open access: yesPlant Pathology, Volume 75, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
In total, 858 Phytophthora infestans isolates were collected from 2016 to 2018, 2020 and 2021 from 10 locations in different regions of Poland. Almost 24% of the isolates were classified to five known European genotypes: EU13, EU34, EU41, EU36 and EU37, whereas 75% of the population was genotypically and phenotypically diverse.

Amphibian Immune Defenses against Chytridiomycosis: Impacts of Changing Environments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Eco-immunology is the field of study that attempts to understand the functions of the immune system in the context of the host's environment. Amphibians are currently suffering devastating declines and extinctions in nearly all parts of the world due to ...

Survival of Moss Reproductive Structures under Simulated Martian Environmental Conditions and Extreme Thermal Stress: Vibrational Spectroscopic Study and Astrobiological Implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The principal goal of astrobiology is the search for extraterrestrial life forms. A key aspect is the study of the ability of different kinds of terrestrial organisms to support simulated extraterrestrial environmental conditions.

The embryology of Prionium serratum (L.f.) Drege ex E.Mey. (Juncaceae:Cyperales) and its implications for the phylogeny of Cyperales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
This study investigates the phylogenetic placement of Prionium serratum, a monotypic genus in the family Juncaceae and the consequences of this on the evolutionary relationships of Cyperales using embryology, morphology and rbcL sequence data.
