Using spatial statistics to identify emerging hot spots of forest loss

open access: yes, 2017
As sources of data for global forest monitoring grow larger, more complex and numerous, data analysis and interpretation become critical bottlenecks for effectively using them to inform land use policy discussions. Here in this paper, we present a method

Use of within-array replicate spots for assessing differential expression in microarray experiments

open access: yesBioinform., 2005
MOTIVATION Spotted arrays are often printed with probes in duplicate or triplicate, but current methods for assessing differential expression are not able to make full use of the resulting information.

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

Synchrotron x-ray Studies of Superlattice Ordering in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 Single Crystals Doped with PbTiO3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The temperature dependence of the superlattice reflections: a) F spots and b) alpha spots in a lead magnesium niobate (PMN) single crystals containing 0% and 6% of PbTiO3 (PT) has been studied using synchrotron x-ray scattering techniques.

The power of microRNA regulation—insights into immunity and metabolism

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
MicroRNAs are emerging as crucial regulators at the intersection of metabolism and immunity. This review examines how miRNAs coordinate glucose and lipid metabolism while simultaneously modulating T‐cell development and immune responses. Moreover, it highlights how cutting‐edge artificial intelligence applications can identify miRNA biomarkers ...

Patient‐Centered Insights: Using Health Care Complaints to Reveal Hot Spots and Blind Spots in Quality and Safety

open access: yesMilbank Quarterly, 2018
Policy Points: Health care complaints contain valuable data on quality and safety; however, there is no reliable method of analysis to unlock their potential.

Hot spots and the hollowness of proton-proton interactions at high energies

open access: yes, 2016
We present a dynamical explanation of the hollowness effect observed in proton-proton scattering at $\sqrt s\!=\!7$ TeV. This phenomenon, not observed at lower energies, consists in a depletion of the inelasticity density at zero impact parameter of the ...

Detecting Stellar Spots by Gravitational Microlensing [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
During microlensing events with a small impact parameter, the amplification of the source flux is sensitive to the surface brightness distribution of the source star.

The cytoskeletal control of B cell receptor and integrin signaling in normal B cells and chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In lymphoid organs, antigen recognition and B cell receptor signaling rely on integrins and the cytoskeleton. Integrins act as mechanoreceptors, couple B cell receptor activation to cytoskeletal remodeling, and support immune synapse formation as well as antigen extraction.

Climate impacts on global hot spots of marine biodiversity

open access: yesScience Advances, 2017
The main hot spots of marine biodiversity are also the areas that are affected the most by climate and, potentially, fishing impacts. Human activities drive environmental changes at scales that could potentially cause ecosystem collapses in the marine ...
