Combustion of the Diesel Fuel Spray
ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2001AbstractThe paper deals with the computer simulation of the Diesel fuel spray combustion under the similar conditions as in Diesel engines. A mathematical model of the spray propulsion and combustion is treated which allows the observation of the phenomena in the spray during its movement through air. Fuel droplets of the spray are vaporized due to the

Percolation theory, which addresses the connectedness of randomly-defined regions of space, is used to investigate the geometry of the flame surface of a combusting spray in the fast-chemistry, flame-sheet limit. In particular, percolation theory predicts the existence of two distinct combustion regimes in non-premixed sprays, regimes defined herein as

A review is given of single-droplet vaporization models for spray combustion studies. Formulations and numerical methods for the analysis and solution of the two-phase vaporizing and reacting spray problem are discussed. Both one-dimensional and axisymmetric geometries, with and without unsteadiness, are evaluated.

A Multi-Section Droplet Combustion Model for Spray Combustion Simulation
Volume 2: Combustion, Fuels and Emissions, Parts A and B, 2011Since 1960s, from experimental observation, there are several stages for liquid droplets in multi-phase combustion: pure heating, pure evaporation without individual droplet combustion, and individual droplet combustion (burning) with individual flame around which enhances evaporation.

Starting from a consideration of microscopic flame propagation modes between neighboring droplets and macroscopic flame propagation modes in spray elements, the excitation mechanism of group combustion (diffusion flame enclosing droplets) is described for an example of atomizing liquid fuel jet issuing into an otherwise stagnant oxidizing atmosphere.

Comparison of droplet combustion models in spray combustion
27th Joint Propulsion Conference, 1991This study compares the spray combustion characteristics predicted by the above three models with experimental observations resulting from various inlet mean droplet sizes. A simplified combustor, similar to that used for the spray BurkeSchumann diffusion flame, is assumed.
