Drift of 10 herbicides after tractor spray application. 1. Secondary drift (evaporation)

In the present study the evaporation of 10 herbicides was investigated during five field experiments, and the amount deposited per surface area was quantified inside the field using simple passive dosimeters consisting of microscope slides placed on plastic lids. On an average basis 90% of the applied amount reached the field.

Abstract Mitigation of risk arising from spray drift in Europe is achieved mostly by implementation of no-spray buffer zones and the use of approved drift-reducing techniques. Although physicochemical properties of spray solutions are known to influence spray drift, they are not yet incorporated into regulatory risk assessments at the European level.

Glyphosate Spray Drift Management with Drift-Reducing Nozzles and Adjuvants

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of five spray-nozzle types and three drift-control adjuvants (DCA) on glyphosate spray drift. The extended-range (XR) flat-fan nozzle at 280 kPa was used as the standard comparison. DCAs were evaluated for drift reduction with the use of the XR and air-induction (AI) nozzles.

The objective of these tests was to evaluate pesticide drift from ground applications using a standard manual pump backpack sprayer and a UTV-mounted boomless sprayer. Three deposition sampler types were deployed: Mylar cards, water-sensitive papers, and artificial foliage.

Shields to reduce spray drift

The effect of nine spray-boom shield designs on spray drift is presented. Standard flat-fan nozzles and "low-drift" nozzles were used. Results are based on experiments conducted in a wind tunnel, and computer simulations. Performance of all experimental shields was evaluated under two spray pressures and two air flow rates.
