INTERMITTENT SPRINKLER IRRIGATION INCREASES IRRIGATION APPLICATION EFFICIENCY

open access: yesHortScience, 1993
Experiments were conducted to determine if applying a container-grown plant's daily water allotment in multiple applications (intermittently) increased application efficiency relative to the allotment applied in a single application (continuous). Water was applied (simulated overhead sprinkler system) to marigold plants in a pine bark substrate.

Assessing the feasibility of sprinkler irrigation schemes and their adaptation to future climate change in groundwater over-exploitation regions

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management
Promoting appropriate water-saving irrigation is an important pathway to alleviate groundwater overexploitation in irrigated agriculture. Whether an alternative irrigation method is feasible relies on quantitative assessments of its impacts on crop yield

A compact to revitalise large-scale irrigation systems using a leadership-partnership-ownership ‘theory of change’ [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In countries with transitional economies such as those found in South Asia, large-scale irrigation systems (LSIS) with a history of public ownership account for about 115 million ha (Mha) or approximately 45% of their total area under irrigation.
