Natal dispersal is a key ecological process influencing gene flow, population connectivity and individual fitness. In altricial birds, the transition from fledging to natal dispersal is mediated by the post‐fledging dependence period, which is often difficult to observe in elusive, forest‐dwelling species.

Populations of the Short‐eared Owl Asio flammeus have declined across Europe and North America, probably in response to habitat degradation driven by agricultural intensification. However, long‐term evidence linking farmland habitat change to variation in breeding density and reproductive success remains limited.

Mottled Duskywing (Erynnis martialis) populations had moderate levels of genetic diversity at microsatellites with expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.43 to 0.58, and populations more than 10 km apart were differentiated from one another. Weak patterns of isolation by distance and low effective population sizes suggest that all but the largest ...

Small birches matter: Beetle diversity on burned birch and pine in boreal forests
Burned birch hosted higher beetle richness than burned pine. Higher beetle richness on birch was associated with its greater post‐fire mortality, with charred, dead birches attracting more specialized beetles. Retaining burned birch alongside pine can enhance saproxylic and pyrophilous beetle diversity after prescribed burning.
