Assessing the accuracy of field‐based versus laboratory methods for determining the age of roe deer
Accurate age determination in roe deer Capreolus capreolus is essential for selective harvesting and informed population management, yet field‐based methods widely used by hunters remain imprecise. This study compared field‐based and laboratory age determination methods in 204 harvested roe deer, categorized by sex and habitat type (forest versus open ...

Habitat selection of moose in Sweden in managed boreal forests with Pinus contorta and P. sylvestris
Human land use can take advantage of using exotic species to increase financial benefits. However, the use of exotic tree species might affect ecosystem functioning, potentially including the habitat use and movement behaviour of animals, modifying their ecological impact, and interactions with human land use.

A proof of concept for linking individual identity to camera traps
Small mammal movements are difficult to monitor, both visually and with remote tracking devices, due to the animals' small body size and elusive behavior. Cameras deployed at fixed locations can provide continuous, non‐invasive records in natural habitats, yet camera‐derived indices remain sparsely validated and generally do not allow inference at the ...

In a large‐scale German forest experiment, habitat heterogeneity increased spider turnover but reduced local alpha diversity through habitat filtering. Together, these effects lowered landscape‐scale spider diversity. As such, the study shows whether environmental heterogeneity increases or decreases biodiversity depends on the balance between habitat ...

Mechanisms of resistance of white spruce to the spruce bud moth
There is a genetic basis to resistance of open-grown white spruce trees to their primary pest, the spruce bud moth, Zeiraphera canadensis Mutt. & Free. Resistance is attributable to late budburst and unknown factors associated with higher predation and parasitism of eggs and mortality of old larvae.
