Nitrogen dynamics 35 years after stand‐replacing fire: Aboveground pools grow as surface soil pools remain unchanged

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Natural disturbances induce variable recovery pathways, and long‐term studies are key to understanding how that variability affects ecosystem function over time and across space. In subalpine forests, high‐severity wildfires produce high variability in postfire tree density, but how this variability relates to nitrogen (N) cycling remains ...

Riverbank Erosion Susceptibility Under Varying Sedimentological and Freeze–Thaw Conditions in Cold Climate Regions

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 10, October 2026.
Freeze–thaw processes, moisture, and sediment properties control riverbank erosion in boreal–subarctic rivers. Field measurements, geotechnical analyses and monitoring reveal continuous, seasonally driven erosion, while climate projections indicate reduced freezing, potentially increasing erosion risk under warming conditions.

Interacting Effects of Wood and Channel Geometry on Pool Depth in Gravel‐Bed Rivers

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 10, October 2026.
The river gradient and associated grain size distribution and other factors determine the relative influence of channel geometry versus wood on the resulting bed morphology. Bed morphology reflects the interaction between channel geometry and wood, suggesting that the most effective restoration to create pool habitat will consider this interaction ...

Estimation of Error Margin in the Quantification of Large Wood Volumes in River From In Situ and UAV Measurements

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 10, October 2026.
Large wood (LW) plays a key role in river dynamics and biodiversity, but quantifying its volume and budget remains challenging. This study compared in situ and UAV‐based measurements of LW jams in two Gaspé Peninsula rivers (Québec, Canada), highlighting strong variability mainly due to operator bias. A new methodology reduced this variability, leading

Insect communities of late Pleistocene steppe–tundra and Holocene boreal forest ecosystems in central Yukon Territory, Canada

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, Volume 41, Issue 7, Page 1178-1199, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Subfossil insect communities from the Quartz Creek site provide a detailed record of both Late Pleistocene steppe–tundra and Holocene boreal forest ecosystems in central Yukon Territory, Canada. Fifteen Pleistocene assemblages (marine isotope stages [MIS] 4 to 2) are dominated by steppe–tundra and dry‐tundra taxa, particularly the weevils ...
