Combining multiple data sources to estimate autumn migration timing and hunting exposure of woodcocks in Central Europe

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 4, October–December 2026.
Managing the harvest of wild birds requires knowledge about their provenance. We show that local woodcocks depart Switzerland after the onset of the hunting season, but that due to the dilution by more numerous migrants few local birds are shot. Abstract During migration, individuals of migratory species occurring in a specific area can include a ...

Fire Performance and Flame‐Retardant Behavior of Epoxy Resin Modified With Fly Ash and Aluminum Trihydrate

open access: yesApplied Research, Volume 5, Issue 5, October 2026.
Fly ash (FA) and aluminium trihydrate (ATH) were incorporated into epoxy to enhance fire performance. Increasing FA content delayed ignition and reduced heat release, while the FA with ATH combination significantly improved thermal protection, extending the time for coated steel to reach 100°C from 183 to 646 s.

Application of close‐kin mark–recapture to an American black bear population using harvest samples

open access: yesEcological Applications, Volume 36, Issue 7, October 2026.
Abstract Close‐kin mark–recapture (CKMR) offers a promising alternative to traditional mark–recapture methods for estimating wildlife population parameters. CKMR estimates demographic parameters by identifying genetic relationships between individuals, effectively “recapturing” parental genotypes through their offspring's genetic profiles.

Stand and Landscape Drivers of Trap Captures of the Pine Wilt Disease Vector Monochamus alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in the Qinling Mountains

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
This study examines how stand structure and surrounding landscape context influence the trap‐based abundance of Monochamus alternatus, the principal vector of pine wilt disease, in the Qinling Mountains of China. Using pheromone‐trap monitoring, multi‐scale landscape metrics, and multimodel inference, we show that local host composition and fine‐scale ...

Wolves and humans both shape patterns of deer browsing in a temperate forest ecosystem of Central Europe

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 10, October 2026.
Predator–prey interactions can trigger behavioural responses in ungulates, influencing their space‐use and foraging behaviour and, in turn, indirectly affecting browsing pressure. Changes in browsing pressure can affect plant recruitment and species composition, shaping forest regeneration through predator‐mediated trophic cascades.
