Peer Pressure: Do the Fitness Benefits of Animal Behavioral Traits Vary With Conspecific Density?

open access: yesEthology, EarlyView.
We show that the activity of juvenile North American red squirrels influenced their survival in a density‐dependent manner: more active individuals had higher survival under high conspecific density, whereas less active juveniles had higher survival under low densities. Juveniles who were both more active and aggressive were more likely to survive. Our

Serial‐Passage Assessment Shows No Confirmed Resistance Development to Norway Spruce (Picea Abies) Resin in Bacterial Species Relevant to Wound Infection [PDF]

open access: yesMicrobiologyopen
Serial‐passage testing in wound‐relevant bacteria showed that Norway spruce (Picea abies) resin did not produce confirmed resistance development under the conditions tested. These findings support spruce resin as a natural antimicrobial with low propensity to select resistance.

Variation in forest area influences post‐fledging development and dispersal onset in the Eurasian Goshawk (Astur gentilis)

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Natal dispersal is a key ecological process influencing gene flow, population connectivity and individual fitness. In altricial birds, the transition from fledging to natal dispersal is mediated by the post‐fledging dependence period, which is often difficult to observe in elusive, forest‐dwelling species.

Population dynamics and reproductive success of Short‐eared Owls in relation to widely fluctuating food abundance and farmland habitat degradation

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Populations of the Short‐eared Owl Asio flammeus have declined across Europe and North America, probably in response to habitat degradation driven by agricultural intensification. However, long‐term evidence linking farmland habitat change to variation in breeding density and reproductive success remains limited.

Population genetic analysis of the endangered Mottled Duskywing butterfly (Erynnis martialis) informs species reintroduction

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Mottled Duskywing (Erynnis martialis) populations had moderate levels of genetic diversity at microsatellites with expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.43 to 0.58, and populations more than 10 km apart were differentiated from one another. Weak patterns of isolation by distance and low effective population sizes suggest that all but the largest ...
