Carapace Morphology Variations in Captive Tortoises: Insights from Three-Dimensional Analysis [PDF]

open access: yesAnimals
The carapace morphology of tortoises is a crucial characteristic used for species identification, with features such as shell shape, roughness, and color patterns varying among species.

Shorter telomeres are associated with shell anomalies in a long-lived tortoise [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 323, Issue 1, Page 67-75, May 2024.
Age-related telomere length (TL) variation is relatively well-described for mammals, birds and other model organisms. Nevertheless, it remains largely unknown in ectotherms, especially turtles and tortoises, which are extremely long-lived species with ...

Human-mediated secondary contact of two tortoise lineages results in sex-biased introgression [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Human-mediated secondary contact of recently diverged taxa offers valuable opportunities for studying the evolutionary mechanisms involved in the establishment and maintenance of genetic boundaries between taxa.

Mechanisms Determining Body Size and Shape Difference in Algerian Spur-Thighed Tortoises (Testudo graeca). [PDF]

open access: yesAnimals (Basel), 2022
Using data for the body size and shell shape of Algerian Testudo graeca, we assessed how proximate causes shaped the observed variation in the morphology of adults. All of the studied populations displayed significant sexual size and shape dimorphisms. Relative to body length, females displayed larger, more voluminous and domed shells than males.

Evaluation of gv26 electrical acupuncture stimulation on anesthetic recovery time of spur-thighed tortoise (testudo graeca) [PDF]

open access: yesKafkas Universitesi Veteriner Fakültesi Dergisi, 2023
Recovery time from anesthesia can be extended in reptiles, consequently patients undergoing general anesthesia, require prolonged monitoring period which increases the probability of postoperative complications.

First detection of herpesvirus and prevalence of mycoplasma infection in free-ranging Hermann’s tortoises (Testudo hermanni), and in potential pet vectors

open access: yesPeer Community Journal, 2022
Two types of pathogens cause highly contagious upper respiratory tract diseases (URTD) in Chelonians: testudinid herpesviruses (TeHV) and a mycoplasma (Mycoplasma agassizii). In captivity, these infections are frequent and can provoke outbreaks.

Bergmann's and Rensch's rules and the spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca) [PDF]

open access: yesBiological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015
Body size is an ecologically important variable in animals. The geographical size variation of most snakes and some lizards counters Bergmann's rule in that, among related taxa, the larger ones live at warmer latitudes. However, exceptions notwithstanding, and despite being ectothermic, turtles as a group tend to obey Bergmann's rule.

The oldest evidence of Testudo graeca (Testudinidae) in the Iberian Peninsula

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 306, Issue 6, Page 1537-1547, June 2023., 2023
Abstract The Testudo graeca (i.e., Greek Tortoise or Spur‐thighed Tortoise) origin in Western Europe is a subject of debate within the scientific community. The species is a part of the current Spanish biodiversity, with three isolated populations, located in the south‐eastern (Almeria and Murcia) and south‐western (Doñana National Park, Andalusia ...
