A square root of Hurwitz numbers
Manuscripta mathematica, 2018We exhibit a generating function of spin Hurwitz numbers analogous to (disconnected) double Hurwitz numbers that is a tau function of the two-component BKP (2-BKP) hierarchy and is a square root of a tau function of the two-component KP (2-KP) hierarchy ...

If A is an n-square positive semidefinite Hermitian matrix of rank 1, then the Hadamard square root of A is the n-square matrix obtained by replacing each entry of A by the principal value of its square root. It is proved that if A has no zero or negative entries, then the Hadamard square root has odd rank and all odd ranks are possible.

A new type of valve is introduced, the square-root valve, in which the valve stem radius is machined to vary as the square root of the turn number N. The open area then varies in direct proportion to the turn number, and the measured flow rate Qs(N) was found to be adequate to allow this valve to be used in an automatic feedback control system.

The slide rule is very satisfactory for finding square roots accurate to three significant digits. There are situations, however, in which a more accurate root is desired. The method given below will enable the operator to use his slide rule in combination with ordinary division or with a computing machine to find roots to 6, 8, 12 or more significant ...
