Square-wave jerks and square-wave oscillations: treatment with valproic acid
Neuro-Ophthalmology, 1997Experimental studies in monkeys have demonstrated that injection of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonists into the superior colliculus restricts saccadic eye movements, while injection of GABA antagonists leads to square-wave jerks (SWJ). To investigate the role of GABA in saccadic interruptions of fixation, we treated five patients who had SWJ and ...

Faraday waves: rolls versus squares
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1994Weakly nonlinear capillary—gravity waves of frequency ω and wavenumber k that are induced on the surface of a liquid in a square cylinder that is subjected to the vertical displacement a0 cos 2ωt are studied on the assumptions that: 0 < δ < ka0, where δ is the linear damping ratio; the dominant modes are cos kx and cos ky, where x and y are ...

Square-wave-driven stochastic resonance
Physical Review A, 1991In bistable systems subjected to both periodic and random forcing, the output signal-to-noise ratio may be improved by an increase in the input noise. For the square-wave periodic forcing we extend Kramers's escape-rate theory to analyze this so-called stochastic phenomenon. Our analysis recovers the adiabatic result, and may be applied to nonadiabatic

In his review of The Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics by Roland Omnes (February p54), Alistair Rae states that "the key problem in the interpretation of quantum physics" for many people is the necessity of adding "by hand" our "interpretation of the squared modulus of the wave function as a probability distribution".

A new circuit is proposed which uses a bridge network for the timing element. The square-wave generator consists of an RC bridge network, a voltage comparator and a pair of electronic switches. The circuit analysis in the paper shows that the generator is self compensating with respect to power-supply variations and to variations in the active circuit ...
