Influence of tip clearance and cavity depth on heat transfer in a cutback squealer tip

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 2020
Numerical simulations are conducted to present the aerothermal performance of a turbine blade tip with cutback squealer rim. Two different tip clearance heights (0.5%, 1.0% of the blade span) and three different cavity depths (2.0%, 3.0%, and 6.0% of the blade span) are investigated.

Effect of Tip Gap Height on Heat/Mass Transfer over a Cavity Squealer Tip

Journal of Fluid Machinery, 2013
ABSTRACT The effect of tip gap height on heat/mass transfer characteristics on the floor of cavity squealer tip has been investigated in a turbine cascade for power generation by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. The squealer rim height is chosen to be an optimal one of h st /c = 5.51% for the tip gap height-to-chord ratios of h/c = 1.0,

Effects of Squealer Width and Height on Aerodynamic Performance of Tip-Leakage Flow of Cavity Tips

Proceedings of Global Power & Propulsion Society, 2022
The scraping vortex (SV) is the dominant flow structure in the cavity tip gap. As the basic geometric parameters, it is of great significance to explore the influence mechanism of the squealer width and height on the evolution of SV. In this study, the influence mechanism of the squealer width and height on the SV evolution and aerodynamic ...

Comparison of Turbine Tip Leakage Flow for Flat Tip and Squealer Tip Geometries at High-Speed Conditions

Volume 2: Turbo Expo 2004, 2004
The tip leakage flow characteristics for flat and squealer turbine tip geometries are studied in the von Karman Institute Isentropic Light Piston Compression Tube facility, CT-2, at different Reynolds and Mach number conditions for a fixed value of the tip gap in a non-rotating, linear cascade arrangement.

Study on the blade squealer tip affecting tip leakage flow and performance of a multiphase pump

Physics of Fluids, 2023
Tip clearance is the distance required between the blade tip and the pump body wall of an impeller in a helicon-axial multiphase pump, which tends to induce tip leakage flow. The tip leakage vortex formed by the interaction of tip leakage flow with the mainstream can seriously affect the performance of the multiphase pump.

Effect of Squealer Geometry Arrangement on a Gas Turbine Blade Tip Heat Transfer

Journal of Heat Transfer, 2001
Abstract This study investigates the effect of a squealer tip geometry arrangement on heat transfer coefficient and static pressure distributions on a gas turbine blade tip in a five-bladed stationary linear cascade. A transient liquid crystal technique is used to obtain detailed heat transfer coefficient distribution.

Effect of Various Tip Clearance Squealer Design on Turbine Stage Efficiency

Volume 2A: Turbomachinery, 2015
This paper presents investigation of nine tip squealer design variants based on full 3D Navier-Stokes CFD calculations. In particular two main design features have been studied: the impact of relative squealer cavity rim extension and the impact of pressure side squealer cavity rim inclination on stage efficiency. All these cases have been compared for

Digital Shadow and Robust Optimization of in Service Squealer Tip Turbine Blades

Volume 10D: Turbomachinery — Multidisciplinary Design Approaches, Optimization, and Uncertainty Quantification; Turbomachinery General Interest; Unsteady Flows in Turbomachinery, 2022
Abstract The term uncertainty quantification (UQ) refers to a set of techniques which are used to measure the statistical variability of several input parameters. In recent years, UQ has become increasingly relevant due to its applications in robust design and optimization (RDO).

Heterogeneous Optimization Strategies for Carved and Squealer-Like Turbine Blade Tips

Volume 5B: Heat Transfer, 2015
Superior rotor tip geometries possess the potential to simultaneously mitigate aerodynamic losses and severe thermal loads onto the rotor overtip region. However, classical design strategies are usually constrained to a specific type of geometry, narrowing the spread of shape topologies considered during the design phase. The current paper presents two

Experimental Study on Aerodynamic Loss and Heat Transfer for Various Squealer Tips

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2020
Abstract This paper presents aerodynamic loss data for five squealer configurations of a full squealer (FS), a pressure-side squealer (PS), a suction-side squealer (SS), a camberline squealer (CS), and a full-camberline squealer (FCS) in a low-speed turbine cascade. In addition, tip thermal load data are also reported for the FS, PS, and
