Compressible Squeeze Films and Squeeze Bearings

open access: yesJournal of Basic Engineering, 1964
Experimental agreement with a finite-difference solution of the isothermal squeeze film equation was obtained for steady-state sinusoidal squeeze motion of parallel, coaxial disks. At low squeeze number, the film force is in phase with the velocity; at high squeeze number, with the displacement.

Graphene Squeeze-Film Pressure Sensors

open access: yesNano Letters, 2016
The operating principle of squeeze-film pressure sensors is based on the pressure dependence of a membrane’s resonance frequency, caused by the compression of the surrounding gas which changes the resonator stiffness.

The magnetohydrodynamic squeeze film

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1964
Magnetohydrodynamic squeeze films are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The theory of magnetohydrodynamic lubrication as applied to squeeze films is extended to include fluid-inertia effects and buoyant forces. Excellent agreement is obtained between theory and experiment.

The grease squeeze film

Wear, 1987
Abstract This paper studies the load capacity and power dissipated by friction for grease squeeze films. The problem is solved both analytically (approximately) and numerically. The results are in agreement with experimental observation regarding the increased damping capacity of oils compared with that of greases having the same viscosity.

Squeeze Film Theory forCosserat Fluids

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1981
AbstractThe fundamental theory of squeeze film of fluids with inner structure is considered. The basic equations of motion of Cosserat fluids are reviewed. The special case of creeping parallel flow is investigatd and the expression for the velocity distribution in a narrow channel is derived.

Micropolar Squeeze Films

Journal of Lubrication Technology, 1975
An analysis of micropolar squeeze films is presented. Expressions are derived for calculating the pressure, the load-carrying capacity of the squeeze film and film thickness–time relationship. Numerical results computed from these expressions reveal that fluid microstructure improves the squeeze film action and increases the load-carrying capacity of ...

Squeeze film pressures

Applied Scientific Research, 1964
As parallel faces separated by a fluid film approach one another, a pressure is developed in the film. The reduced Navier-Stokes equations are solved by transform methods for both rectangular and cylindrical geometries. Relatively high pressures can exist at small asperities on the surfaces as they approach one another.

Routes to Chaos in Squeeze-Film Dampers

Design Engineering, 2004
This work reports on a numerical study undertaken to investigate the imbalance response of a rigid rotor supported by squeeze-film dampers. Two types of damper configurations were considered, namely, dampers without centering springs, and eccentrically operated dampers with centering springs.

On Isothermal Squeeze Films

Journal of Lubrication Technology, 1983
It is shown that squeeze film damping cutoff frequencies can be computed directly from the lowest eigenvalue of the Helmholtz equation. A kinematic mode is proposed and analyzed for the computation of those frequencies and it is demonstrated that Griffin’s calculations may underestimate considerably those frequencies.

Magnetohydrodynamic Squeeze Films

Journal of Basic Engineering, 1964
An analysis of hydrodynamic squeeze films is presented for the case of an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a magnetic field. Circular plates and infinitely long rectangular plates are considered with a uniformly applied magnetic field. The relationships between fluid-film thickness and time are determined analytically and compared with ...
