Peatlands at Southernmost Permafrost Edge: Rapid Carbon Accumulation but High Vulnerability to Drying

Little Ice Age cooling promoted peat initiation and permafrost development at the southern permafrost margin. Rapid carbon accumulation was sustained by permafrost‐suppressed decay and high photosynthetically active radiation, but recent warming‐driven drying is reducing carbon accumulation and increasing carbon‐loss risk.

ABSTRACT Anthropogenic carbonate deposits in Roman aqueducts can provide detailed environmental and archaeological information. The Roman aqueduct of Nîmes (France), famed for the Pont du Gard bridge, was built around AD 50 to convey water over 50 km to the city of Nemausus for drinking and bathing.
