Growers in arid regions often estimate soil water depletion (Dr) of the root zone in making irrigation scheduling decisions. While growers might use soil water sensors, actual Dr in fields may be only vaguely assessed.

This study examines the impacts of anthropogenic activities and natural factors on water resources in the Lusatia region, a lowland area in northern Germany. Using ground‐based and remote sensing data and principal component analysis, the research identified key drivers of groundwater, surface water and evapotranspiration dynamics over 30 years.

IRRIGATION IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES: OCCURRENCE, IMPACTS, AND SUSTAINABILITY [PDF]
Irrigation represents our greatest intervention in the hydrological cycle, accounting for over 80% of extracted freshwater in the Western U.S. Despite its economic and ecological importance, irrigation’s spatial and temporal occurrence, magnitude ...

Abstract In agriculture‐dominated watersheds where natural drainage is poor, agricultural ditches (narrow engineered channels) and tile drains (perforated pipes) are widely employed to enhance surface and subsurface drainage, respectively. Despite their relatively small scale, these features exert substantial control over the hydro‐biogeochemical ...

Irrigation response to drought in the Western United States, 1987–2021
Abstract The Western United States (U.S.) relies heavily on scarce water resources for both ecological services and irrigation. However, the response of irrigation water use during drought is not well documented. Irrigation decision‐making is complex and influenced by human and environmental factors such as water deliveries, crop yields, equipment ...

Enhancing hydrological model calibration through hybrid strategies in data‐scarce regions
Hybrid approach by integrating remote sensing datasets along with field measured river bathymetry data to estimate the river discharge to calibrate the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model can be used for the streams with narrow width. Calibration based on (i) stage‐discharge curve using spatial proximity approach and (ii) water level and river ...
