Who was the real sabertooth predator: Thylacosmilus or Thylacoleo?

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Sabertoothed mammalian predators, all now extinct, were almost exclusively feloid carnivorans (Eutheria, Placentalia): here a couple of extinct metatherian predators are considered in comparison with the placental sabertooths. Thylacosmilus (the “marsupial sabertooth”) and Thylacoleo (the “marsupial lion”) were both relatively large (puma ...

MANAGEMENT OF STAB WOUNDS

open access: yes, 2019
Introduction: A stab wound is defined is a traumatic wound that is penetrating, which can be caused by a sharp object, such as blade, knife or broken glass. A stab as such can cause localized tissue damage along wound track, piercing patient’s skin and develop entry to the body.

Early synapsids neurosensory diversity revealed by CT and synchrotron scanning

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Non‐mammaliaform synapsids (NMS) represent the closest relatives of today's mammals among the early amniotes. Exploring their brain and nervous system is key to understanding how mammals evolved. Here, using CT and Synchrotron scanning, we document for the first time three extreme cases of neurosensory and behavioral adaptations that probe ...

Dynamics of blood viscosity in patients with abdominal stab wounds in the early postoperative period

open access: yesВестник медицинского института «Реавиз»: Реабилитация, врач и здоровье, 2020
We analyzed blood viscosity in patients with abdominal stab wounds in the early postoperative period. We found that these patients had increased blood viscosity starting from day 3 postoperatively.

Comparing cranial biomechanics between Barbourofelis fricki and Smilodon fatalis: Is there a universal killing‐bite among saber‐toothed predators?

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Saber‐tooths, extinct apex predators with long and blade‐like upper canines, have appeared iteratively at least five times in the evolutionary history of vertebrates. Although saber‐tooths exhibit a relatively diverse range of morphologies, it is widely accepted that all killed their prey using the same predatory behavior. In this study, we CT‐

Myological and osteological approaches to gape and bite force reconstruction in Smilodon fatalis

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Masticatory gape and bite force are important behavioral and ecological variables. While much has been written about the highly derived masticatory anatomy of Smilodon fatalis, there remains a great deal of debate about their masticatory behaviors.
