Abstract This article explores the representation of suicide committed for love in English popular print in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It shows how, within ballads and pamphlets, suicide resulting from failed courtship was often portrayed as romantic and an expression of devotion.

Abstract This article discusses the comical representation of inter‐male violence within early modern English jestbooks. It is based on a rigorous survey of the genre, picking out common themes and anecdotes, as well as discussing their reception and sociable functions.
