Doppler lidar signal and turbulence study [PDF]

open access: yes
Wind fields were measured with the ground-based NASA/MSFC lidar are compared with the in situ NASA RB-57 aircraft measurements. The mean wind fields, the turbulence intensities, and the turbulence spectra determined from measurements by both systems are ...

A New Planetary Boundary Layer Scheme Based on LES: Application to the XPIA Campaign

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2019
We present a new planetary boundary layer scheme based on large‐eddy simulations for different atmospheric stability classes. Large‐eddy simulations results are compared with the wind speed measurements from the meteorological mast at the Test Centre for

A stable absorbing boundary layer for anisotropic waves

open access: yes, 2008
For some anisotropic wave models, the PML (perfectly matched layer) method of open boundaries can become polynomially or exponentially unstable in time. In this work we present a new method of open boundaries, the phase space filter, which is stable for all wave equations.

Atmospheric boundary layer development over a narrow coastal plain during onshore flow

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2005
A study of the structure of the daytime atmospheric boundary layer during onshore flow over a narrow coastal plain is presented. The main emphasis of the study is on the nature and causes of heating and cooling observed in the boundary layer temperature ...

Instability of the stable boundary layer?

open access: yes, 2006
Many observations of artic boundary layers and nighttime boundary layers in general show low temperatures and weak winds near the surface. These weak wind conditions coincide with extremely low intensities of turbulence. As a result, the upper part of the boundary seems to be de-coupled from the surface.
