A “Balanced” Approach to Stable Boundary Layer Dynamics
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1994Abstract Semiempirical arguments from Roach and Nieuwstadt concerning Richardson numbers Ri, Rf in stably stratified shear layers and boundary layers appear to bypass uncertainties of turbulence closures. Here it is shown that these arguments can be expressed systematically as a Richardson number “balance” condition, derived formally from standard ...

On parameterizing inclined stable boundary layers
2010The mixing length-scale for the stable atmospheric boundary layers, i.e. the characteristic mixing length in the "z-less" regime, as often parameterized in mesoscale models with higher-order closure turbulence parameterization schemes, is assessed. A better treatment of the balance between shearing and buoyancy effects on the "z-less" mixing length ...

Meandering dynamics in the Stable Boundary Layer
2019One year of continuous measurements on 10 levels carried out at a coastal site in Espirito Santo State, south-eastern Brazil, and the FLOSSII dataset were analysed to characterize the wind meandering phenomenon in the Stable Boundary Layer. During low-wind episodes the oscillations of the horizontal components of the wind velocity associated to the ...

Stable Boundary Layer Modeling for Air Quality Applications
2011The stable boundary layer (SBL) is one of the key modeling problems for air quality predictions at local and regional scales. This paper presents an SBL model for the mean wind, temperature, and turbulent flux profiles over a range of stability based on an eddy-diffusivity approach.
