When sharing becomes shameful: atmospheres of class formation in Namibia Quand le partage devient honteux : ambiances de formation de classes en Namibie

Anthropologists have long shown that asking for food in times of need is morally valued in rural Namibia. Yet among the Damara pastoralists with whom I work, people now increasingly describe feeling shame (taob) when they ask for food. In this article, I trace this shift to the affective dynamics of social class formation.

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) manages Pakistan's biometric‐based national identity database, one of the largest identification systems of its kind in the world. This article examines bureaucratic practices used during identity registration to record ‘vital events’ in the lives of citizens: birth, marriage, divorce, and death.

Freedom, as a concept and a value, presents limited prospects for anthropological comparison. The study of enslavement, much neglected in attempts to develop an anthropology of freedom, shows that freedom has been imagined by the enslaved as the opposite of their condition only under particular circumstances.
