Drone‐Based High‐Resolution LiDAR for Undercanopy Archaeology in Mediterranean Environment: Rusellae Case Study (Italy)

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper presents a novel methodology and workflow successful in identifying and mapping undercanopy archaeology in woodland Mediterranean areas. The study area is characterized by dense vegetation typical of the Mediterranean area, located in southern Tuscany (Italy), within the territory of the ancient city of Rusellae next to the ...

Stratigraphic and sedimentologic framework for tephras in the Wilson Creek Formation, Mono Basin, California, USA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Numerous tephra layers occur within the late Pleistocene Wilson Creek Formation, where they are interbedded with lacustrine deposits of Lake Russell, the ancestor of present-day Mono Lake. Most of the tephra layers are rhyolitic in composition, and were produced from the Mono Craters.

Multidisciplinary Approach to Identifying Early Mediaeval Gates: A Case Study of the Břeclav–Pohansko Stronghold

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study presents a comprehensive approach to verifying a presumed western gate at Pohansko by integrating nondestructive geophysical methods (ERT, magnetometry and core prospection) with traditional archaeological excavation. The identification and characterization of gates by nondestructive methods within early mediaeval fortified sites ...

Geographic object‐based image analysis (GEOBIA) of the distribution and characteristics of aeolian sand dunes in Arctic Sweden

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, Volume 34, Issue 1, Page 22-36, January/March 2023., 2023
Abstract Current climate change in the Arctic is unprecedented in the instrumental record, with profound consequences for the environment and landscape. In Arctic Sweden, aeolian sand dunes have been impacted by climatic changes since their initial formation after the retreat of the last glacial ice sheet.

A four stage evolution of the White Channel gravel: Implications for stratigraphy and palaeoclimates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Although the White Channel gravel (WCG) of the Klondike district, Yukon, contains gold placers which have been exploited for over a century, few sedimentological studies have been undertaken.

Post-rift sequence architecture and stratigraphy in the Oligo-Miocene Sardinia rift (Western Mediterranean Sea) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Rift basins provide important sedimentary archives to reconstruct past tectonic and climatic conditions. Understanding their sedimentary history is, however, largely hampered by the competing influence of tectonic versus climatic forcing. The aim of this

Bayesian classification for dating archaeological sites via projectile points [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Dating is a key element for archaeologists. We propose a Bayesian approach to provide chronology to sites that have neither radiocarbon dating nor clear stratigraphy and whose only information comes from lithic arrowheads. This classifier is based on the Dirichlet-multinomial inferential process and posterior predictive distributions.

Dating glacier ice of the last millennium by quantum technology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Radiometric dating with 39Ar covers a unique timespan and offers key advances in interpreting environmental archives of the last millennium. Although this tracer has been acknowledged for decades, studies so far have been limited by the low abundance and radioactivity, thus requiring huge sample sizes.

Natural and Artificial Aging Methods For Silver Mock‐ups In Recent Conservation And Heritage Studies: A Short Review

open access: yesChemistry–Methods, EarlyView.
We discuss the tarnishing issues of historical silver objects and review the silver (pure and sterling) aging methods employed in recent conservation and heritage studies, with a focus on chemical aging methods. The aging protocols used in the reference studies are tabulated for quick comparisons.

Spatial and temporal dynamics of aufeis in the Tso Moriri basin, eastern Ladakh, India

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, Volume 34, Issue 1, Page 81-93, January/March 2023., 2023
Abstract Aufeis is a common phenomenon in cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere that develops during winter by successive water overflow and freezing on ice‐covered surfaces. Most studies on aufeis occurrence focus on regions in North America and Siberia, while research in High Mountain Asia (HMA) is still in an exploratory phase.
