Monitoring of process and risk-adjusted medical outcomes using a multi-stage MEWMA chart [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Most statistical process control programmes in healthcare focus on surveillance of outcomes at the final stage of a procedure, such as mortality or failure rates. Such an approach ignores the multi-stage nature of these procedures, in which a patient progresses through several stages prior to the final stage.

The multiple roles of the NlpC_P60 peptidase family in mycobacteria – an underexplored target for antimicrobial drug discovery

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The NlpC_P60 superfamily of peptidases is recognised by its key role in bacterial cell wall homeostasis. Recently, studies have also described the involvement of NlpC_P60‐like enzymes in bacterial competitive mechanisms and pathogenesis across several lineages.

Making tau amyloid models in vitro: a crucial and underestimated challenge

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review highlights the challenges of producing in vitro amyloid assemblies of the tau protein. We review how accurately the existing protocols mimic tau deposits found in the brain of patients affected with tauopathies. We discuss the important properties that should be considered when forming amyloids and the benchmarks that should be used to ...

To Stage or Not to Stage? That is the Question

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gynecological Cancer, 2010
The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics staging rules for endometrial cancer require pelvic and para-aortic node dissection to define the extent of disease. Retrospective studies have reported improved survival in women who underwent lymphadenectomy compared with those who did not.

Unraveling Mycobacterium tuberculosis acid resistance and pH homeostasis mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis exhibits a remarkable resilience to acid stress. In this Review, we discuss some of the molecular mechanisms and metabolic pathways used by the tubercle bacilli to adapt and resist host‐mediated acid stress. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is a successful pathogen that has developed a variety of strategies to survive and ...

Staging energy sources to extend flight time of a multirotor UAV [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Energy sources such as batteries do not decrease in mass after consumption, unlike combustion-based fuels. We present the concept of staging energy sources, i.e. consuming energy in stages and ejecting used stages, to progressively reduce the mass of aerial vehicles in-flight which reduces power consumption, and consequently increases flight time.

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.

MimicDet: Bridging the Gap Between One-Stage and Two-Stage Object Detection [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Modern object detection methods can be divided into one-stage approaches and two-stage ones. One-stage detectors are more efficient owing to straightforward architectures, but the two-stage detectors still take the lead in accuracy. Although recent work try to improve the one-stage detectors by imitating the structural design of the two-stage ones, the
