Thermo‐Fluorescent Bactericidal Quantum Dots Based Smart Multifunctional Textiles via Molecular Surface Engineering and 3D‐Printed Interlocked Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A versatile approach is presented for fabricating smart multifunctional textiles by integrating thermo‐fluorescent carbon dot/polymer nanocomposite coatings with 3D‐printed interlocked architectures. The fabrics exhibit temperature‐responsive fluorescence, durable hydrophobicity, strong antibacterial and antioxidant activity, and enhanced UV protection.

Development of Heat Engines Powered by Twisted and Coiled Polymer Fiber Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Continuously rotating engines driven by thermally responsive actuating materials can turn waste heat into useful energy. For the first time heat engines operated by twisted and coiled polymer fiber actuators are demonstrated with engine design guided by two simple analytical models.

Direct numerical simulations of an airfoil undergoing dynamic stall at different background disturbance levels

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Mechanics
Thin airfoil dynamic stall at moderate Reynolds numbers is typically linked to the sudden bursting of a small laminar separation bubble close to the leading edge.

A Proof‐of‐Concept Assessment of a Novel Wearable Eyelid Muscle Device: A Pre‐Clinical Animal Cadaver Study for Eyelid Closure Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This article introduces a soft wearable eyelid sling device incorporating a hydraulic soft artificial muscle (SAM) for achieving complete closure of an eyelid. The SAM is driven by a cam mechanism that provides a displacement profile closely matched with those of a healthy eyelid.

Numerical analysis of an elasto-flexible wing configuration using computational fluid structural simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In the present work, different numerical approaches dealing with fluid and structural interaction models are introduced to simulate the aerodynamics and structural behavior of 2D elasto-flexible wings.

Effects of the Reynolds Number on the Efficiency and Stall Mechanisms in a Three-stage Axial Compressor

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics
The Reynolds number ( R e) is an important parameter that can affect compressor performance. This study experimentally and numerically investigated the effect of R e variations on the efficiency and stall mechanisms for a three-stage axial flow ...

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Stall Inception Control by Setting Groove Based on Its Formation Mechanism in Centrifugal Impeller

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics
Stall, a complex flow phenomenon in centrifugal pump, plays a crucial role in pump safety and stability under part-load conditions. In this paper, a verified numerical simulation method is employed to analyze the three-dimensional flow field under the ...

Multimodal Locomotion in Insect‐Inspired Microrobots: A Review of Strategies for Aerial, Surface, Aquatic, and Interfacial Motion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This review identifies key design considerations for insect‐inspired microrobots capable of multimodal locomotion. To draw inspiration, biological and robotic strategies for moving in air, on water surfaces, and underwater are examined, along with approaches for crossing the air–water interface.

Fluid Mechanics of Compressible Dynamic Stall Control Using Dynamically Deforming Airfoils

open access: yes, 2001
Abstract : This report summarizes the key results from the two components of the study: (1) development of the knowledge and understanding of the fundamental fluid mechanics of the interactions of the unsteady flow occurring under the influence of the time scales of airfoil reduced frequency and dynamic leading edge adaptation at different flow ...
