Stall Inception in the Compressor System of a Turbofan Engine

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1998
Compressor flow instabilities have been the subject of a great number of investigations during the past decade. While most of this research work was done on isolated test-rig compressors, this paper presents stall inception measurements in the compressor system of a two-spool turbofan engine at various power settings.

Review of Stall Inception in Turbocompressors

Journal of Fluid Machinery, 2003
Stall inception means the phenomena of rotating stall initiation. The initiation mechanism of rotating stall, the existence of stall precursor, the behavior of stall precursor, stall warning scheme and control scheme are the main interests in stall inception research. Compared to the studies on rotating stall which has long history, the stall inception

Stall Inception Measurements in a High-Speed Multistage Compressor

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1995
This paper presents unsteady measurements taken in a high-speed four-stage aeroengine compressor prior to the onset of aerodynamic flow instabilities. In this experiment, 40 fast-response pressure transducers have been located at various axial and circumferential positions throughout the machine in order to give a very detailed picture of stall ...

Pre-Stall Waves: Precursors to Stall Inception in a Contra-Rotating Axial Fan

Volume 2E: Turbomachinery, 2020
Abstract Stall in a compressor or a fan is often associated with pre-stall waves, that could act as precursors. The present study aims to understand in detail the pre-stall waves leading to instabilities in a low aspect ratio, low hub-tip ratio contra-rotating axial fan.

Stall Inception in Axial Flow Compressors

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1991
Studies have been conducted on two laboratory test compressors to investigate the process leading to the formation of finite amplitude rotating stall cells. The measurements were obtained from circumferential arrays of hot wires and were spatially and temporarily analyzed to show that modal perturbations are not always present prior to stall, and when ...

Computations of bladerow stall inception in transonic flows

The Aeronautical Journal, 1999
AbstractA three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes solver has been used to simulate stall inception in a single row ten passage segment of a transonic fan, the NASA rotor-67. At subsonic flow conditions, the 3D results illustrate a rotating stall inception with short scale part-span cells rotating at around 80% rotor speed, similar to that observed in ...

When are Nonlinearities Important at Stall Inception?

Volume 1: Turbomachinery, 1994
Recent experimental work has shown that in some compressors, the nonaxisymmetric disturbance leading to loss of stability appears as a localised phenomena, rather than a travelling sine wave which spans the entire circumference, suggesting that nonlinear effects appear very early in the evolution of the disturbance.

Stall Inception in a High-Speed Centrifugal Compressor

Volume 1: Aircraft Engine; Marine; Turbomachinery; Microturbines and Small Turbomachinery, 2001
Stall inception in a high-speed centrifugal compressor has been examined. The main objective was to find stall precursor and to develop a reliable stall warning method. Eight equally spaced fast-response pressure transducers in the inducer detected the spatial structure of small amplitude perturbations, via spatial Fourier transform, as stall is ...

Spatial Correlation Based Stall Inception Analysis

Volume 6: Turbo Expo 2007, Parts A and B, 2007
Investigations of stall inception and compressor pre-stall behavior have used a variety of techniques to make inferences about the mechanisms of rotating stall inception. Many of these techniques utilized data from arrays of circumferentially spaced hot-wires or high frequency response pressure transducers.

Stall inception in a multistage high-speed axial compressor

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 1993
A comprehensive study has been conducted into the inception of stall in a multistage high-speed axial flow compressor. The compressor tested was a highly loaded, four-stage axial compressor representing the state of the art in current design technology. Data were taken at a variety of speeds, both with and without inlet distortion.
