An Investigation of Stall Inception in Centrifugal Compressor Vaned Diffuser1
Journal of Turbomachinery, 2012In compression systems, the stable operating range is limited by rotating stall and/or surge. Two distinct types of stall precursors can be observed prior to full scale instability: the development of long-wavelength modal waves or a short-wavelength, three-dimensional flow breakdown (so-called “spike” stall inception).

Experimental Investigation on the Stall Inception of a Counter-Rotating Compressor
Volume 8: Turbomachinery, Parts A, B, and C, 2012For investigating the flow phenomena in the stall process of a counter-rotating compressor (CRC), static and dynamic experiment have been carried out on a low speed counter-rotating compressor. Seven high response pressure sensors were mounted at the leading edge of rotor 1(R1) and rotor 2(R2) as well as at the outlet of R2 blade tip and root.

Effects of Fan Speed on Rotating Stall Inception and Recovery
Volume 7: Turbomachinery, Parts A, B, and C, 2010An implicit, time-accurate 3D compressible RANS solver is used to simulate rotating stall inception and recovery, the so-called rotating stall hysteresis, in a modern fan geometry. In the first instance, rotating stall was simulated for 70%, 80% and 90% fan speeds using a whole-annulus fan model with a variable-area nozzle downstream.

Effect of RANS Method on Stall Inception Eigenvalue Approach
Volume 2B: Turbomachinery, 2017The effect of mesh, turbulence model and discretization scheme in Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method (RANS) on a stall inception eigenvalue approach is investigated in a transonic compressor rotor. The most influencing flow structures on the result of eigenvalue approach are also identified.

Spike-Type Compressor Stall Inception, Detection, and Control
Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 2010An aerodynamic instability known as stall occurs in axial compressors as the mass flow rate is reduced and the blade loading reaches its limit. At this limiting condition, an easily recognizable flow breakdown process, known as spike-type stall inception, is observed in most modern compressors.

Stall Inception in a High Speed Centrifugal Compressor During Speed Transients
Volume 2C: Turbomachinery, 2017The inception and evolution of rotating stall in a high-speed centrifugal compressor are characterized during speed transients. Experiments were performed in the Single Stage Centrifugal Compressor (SSCC) facility at Purdue University and include speed transients from sub-idle to full speed at different throttle settings while collecting transient ...

A Numerical Study on Rotating Stall Inception in an Axial Compressor
2008A series of numerical study was conducted to analyze stall inception process and to find the mechanism of rotating stall in a subsonic axial compressor. The compressor used in this study showed different flow behaviors depending on the inlet boundary layer thickness at the near stall condition.

Correlation and Prediction of Rotating Stall Inception by Divergence Method
Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1985An empirical correlation of rotating stall inception points of elementary compressors (isolated rotors, stages without prerotation, complete single stages, and multi-stage machines with repeating stages), modeled as equivalent diffusers, is presented. From it, two inception criteria for self-induced rotating stall are derived. Compressor blade rows are

Computational Study of Rotating-Stall Inception in Axial Compressors
Journal of Propulsion and Power, 1997Rotating-stall inception in axial-e ow compressors has been studied computationally using a quasi-threedimensional time-marching Navier ‐ Stokes method with a mixing-length turbulence model. Of particular interest was the effect of external circumferential disturbances corresponding to inlet stagnation pressure distortions and rotor/stator blade ...
