Computations of bladerow stall inception in transonic flows

The Aeronautical Journal, 1999
AbstractA three-dimensional unsteady Navier-Stokes solver has been used to simulate stall inception in a single row ten passage segment of a transonic fan, the NASA rotor-67. At subsonic flow conditions, the 3D results illustrate a rotating stall inception with short scale part-span cells rotating at around 80% rotor speed, similar to that observed in ...

Active control of compressor stall inception: a bifurcation-theoretic approach

Automatica, 1996
Active control of the onset of stall instabilities in axial flow compression systems is pursued using bifurcation analysis of a dynamical model proposed by Moore and Greitzer. The state variables of this model are the mass flow rate, pressure rise, and the amplitude of the first-harmonic mode of the asymmetric component of the flow.

When are Nonlinearities Important at Stall Inception?

Volume 1: Turbomachinery, 1994
Recent experimental work has shown that in some compressors, the nonaxisymmetric disturbance leading to loss of stability appears as a localised phenomena, rather than a travelling sine wave which spans the entire circumference, suggesting that nonlinear effects appear very early in the evolution of the disturbance.

Computational Approach for Predicting Stall-Inception in Multi-Stage Axial Compressors

41st AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2005
A new time-accurate computational approach for predicting stall inception due to long- and short-wavelength phenomena in multistage axial compressors is introduced. The computational approach uses a time-accurate single-blade-passage multi-blade-row strategy that includes many of the primary unsteady modes associated with the early symptoms of stall ...

Stall inception in a multistage high-speed axial compressor

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 1993
A comprehensive study has been conducted into the inception of stall in a multistage high-speed axial flow compressor. The compressor tested was a highly loaded, four-stage axial compressor representing the state of the art in current design technology. Data were taken at a variety of speeds, both with and without inlet distortion.

On the Mechanism of Spike Stall Inception and Near Stall Nonsynchronous Vibration in an Axial Compressor

Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2020
Abstract The aerodynamic and aeroelastic behavior of an engine-like transonic compressor stage is investigated in this paper. Simulations were carried out for the transonic compressor at the Technical University of Darmstadt using the AU3D flow solver.

3D Unsteady Computation of Stall Inception in Axial Compressors

Volume 7: Turbomachinery, Parts A, B, and C, 2010
Rotating stall is one of the unsteady phenomena in multistage axial compressors that will damage both of performance and service life of aero engines. Stall inception is a dynamic process including appearance of pre-stall disturbance, evolvement of disturbances into stall cells, and development of stall cells.

Effect of RANS Method on Stall Inception Eigenvalue Approach

Volume 2B: Turbomachinery, 2017
The effect of mesh, turbulence model and discretization scheme in Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method (RANS) on a stall inception eigenvalue approach is investigated in a transonic compressor rotor. The most influencing flow structures on the result of eigenvalue approach are also identified.

Rotating stall inception in axial compressors under periodic perturbations

2013 25th Chinese Control and Decision Conference (CCDC), 2013
The inception to rotating stall in axial compressors with inlet distortions is theoretically investigated by studying the three state Moore-Greitzer model with periodic perturbations. The model is transformed into a normal form by using the center manifold theory. Based on the normal form, we derived analytically the periodic solutions as well as their

Modelling dynamic stall vortex inception at low Mach numbers

The Aeronautical Journal, 1997
Results of a comparison of dynamic stall onset are presented, as assessed from low Mach number windtunnel data contained in the University of Glasgow's database and that from the well established Beddoes’ model. The model, which was originally developed to reconstruct higher Mach number dynamic stall characteristics, exhibited a lower stall onset ...
