Mid-Span Stall Inception in a Transonic Fan

Volume 2A: Turbomachinery, 2020
Abstract In this paper, steady and unsteady CFD have been used to investigate stall inception for a modern low pressure ratio transonic fan. The computational results are validated against measurement data from a high-speed test facility. CFD validation was approached as a blind test case.

Stall Inception Behavior in a Centrifugal Compressor

Volume 1: Turbomachinery, 1994
In studying the stall inception process, while most results were reported for axial compressors, the present paper investigates the stall inception behavior typified in a centrifugal compressor. The test was conducted with a radially-bladed impeller and in a speed range of 8000–14000 rpm.

Stall inception in a transonic axial fan

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Journal of Power and Energy, 2008
The current paper reports a numerical investigation of stall inception in a transonic compressor rotor, NASA Rotor-67, by using the whole flow passages in the computations. Surface roughness is added to one of the blades in order to trigger rotating stall.

Flow Models in Boundary-Layer Stall Inception

Journal of Basic Engineering, 1961
Physical evidence on stall inception from visual studies, mean-velocity-profile correlations, shear measurements, and fluctuations in separating boundary layers in the neighborhood of stall are discussed. Direct visual studies suggest that stall inception in the laminar boundary layer follows the classical model, but does not necessarily do so in the ...

Spike type of stall inception in the tandem rotor

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2022
There are two known mechanisms of inception of rotating stall in the compressor, modal wave inception and spike inception. However, the stall inception mechanisms for a tandem-rotor have not been explored so far in detail. The paper explores the unsteady behaviour of the tandem rotor. Unsteady casing pressure measurements are carried out with the help

Stall Inception Measurements in a High-Speed Multistage Compressor

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1995
This paper presents unsteady measurements taken in a high-speed four-stage aeroengine compressor prior to the onset of aerodynamic flow instabilities. In this experiment, 40 fast-response pressure transducers have been located at various axial and circumferential positions throughout the machine in order to give a very detailed picture of stall ...

Pre-Stall Waves: Precursors to Stall Inception in a Contra-Rotating Axial Fan

Volume 2E: Turbomachinery, 2020
Abstract Stall in a compressor or a fan is often associated with pre-stall waves, that could act as precursors. The present study aims to understand in detail the pre-stall waves leading to instabilities in a low aspect ratio, low hub-tip ratio contra-rotating axial fan.

Stall inception and control in a transonic fan, part A: Rotating stall inception

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2015
Abstract Half-annulus numerical simulations of rotating stall inception have been carried out on a transonic axial compressor rotor. In order to initiate stall, the tip gap of one of the blades in the half-annulus computational domain was increased, and computations were conducted from choke to near-stall and in-stall conditions.

Stall Inception in a High-Speed Centrifugal Compressor

Volume 1: Aircraft Engine; Marine; Turbomachinery; Microturbines and Small Turbomachinery, 2001
Stall inception in a high-speed centrifugal compressor has been examined. The main objective was to find stall precursor and to develop a reliable stall warning method. Eight equally spaced fast-response pressure transducers in the inducer detected the spatial structure of small amplitude perturbations, via spatial Fourier transform, as stall is ...

Spike-Type Compressor Stall Inception, Detection, and Control

Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 2010
An aerodynamic instability known as stall occurs in axial compressors as the mass flow rate is reduced and the blade loading reaches its limit. At this limiting condition, an easily recognizable flow breakdown process, known as spike-type stall inception, is observed in most modern compressors.
