Volume 5: Turbo Expo 2002, Parts A and B, 2002
Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to study the fundamental flow mechanisms of circumferential grooves in the casing of a transonic compressor and their influence on compressor stall margin. Three different groove configurations were tested in a highly loaded transonic compressor.

An Experimental Investigation on the Mechanism of Stall Margin Improvement of Casing Treatment
Volume 1: Aircraft Engine; Turbomachinery, 1985A single-rotor axial flow compressor and a two-dimensional cascade have been tested with and without casing treatment. A three-dimensional flow mechanism of the onset of rotating stall is suggested. It gives good reason to explain the mechanism of stall-margin improvement of casing treatment.

Abstract Aviation fans often suffer from the negative effect of distorted inflow on the stall margin. An effective way to solve the aforementioned problem is to apply casing treatment for extending the stall margin. However, previously, it was observed that casing treatments often increase the stability but with reduced efficiency ...

The useful operating range of the multistage, axial-flow compressor component of a gas turbine engine limits the extent of operation of that engine. Generally, the compressor stalls or surges at low flow rates and chokes at high flow rates. Thus, any improvement in the range between these compressor aerodynamic limits is normally of benefit to the ...

We investigated a multi-objective optimization technique that can control a trade-off relationship between the efficiency and the stall margin of two-dimensional impellers using only a calculation result at the design flow rate. The suction flow coefficient at the design flow rate of the impeller we designed was 0.04.

As a typical stability enhancement method, the axial slot casing treatment (ASCT) has been verified to extend the stall margin under uniform inflow condition. In order to further investigate its stability-enhancing capability under distorted inlet conditions, a series of experimental studies were carried out on a low-speed axial flow compressor.

This paper describes the method to improve the stall margin of transonic axial flow compressor by controlling the boundary layer on the suction surface of the rotor blade tip through natural aspiration. Aspiration slots in the compressor blade are intended to energize the flow by increasing its momentum on the suction surface.

Improving Stall Margin by Using an Air-Separator for a Variable-Pitch Axial-Flow Fan
Volume 5: Turbo Expo 2004, Parts A and B, 2004An air-separator for extending the operating range of a variable-pitch axial-flow fan has been developed. It has a circular-are outer casing, a part of which forms the guide vane at the inlet of the air-separator. To obtain a wide operating range and to minimize penalties in terms of efficiency and noise, the influence of exposure and clearance ratios ...

Abstract Two passive tip clearance control devices for stall margin improvement in a transonic compressor are compared in detail. The primary objective of the current study is to examine the overall performance in terms of stall margin increase and any associated performance penalties near design operation with axial casing grooves (ACGs)
