Stall Margin Improvement by Casing Treatment—Its Mechanism and Effectiveness

Journal of Engineering for Power, 1977
Experiments on the effect of casing treatment were carried out using low-speed axial-flow compressors. Results on the overall compressor performance and on the flow through the blade row as well as the flow within the treatment slots are presented. Then, based on the experiments, a possible mechanism of the stall margin improvement is suggested.

Low speed axial compressor stall margin improvement by unsteady plasma actuation

Journal of Thermal Science, 2014
This research investigates the use of single dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) actuators for energizing the tip leakage flow to suppress rotating stall inception and extend the stable operating range of a low speed axial compressor with a single rotor.

Stall Margin Improvement in a Centrifugal Compressor Through Endwall Reshaping

ASME 2012 Gas Turbine India Conference, 2012
This paper presents the results of numerical studies on the effect of endwall reshaping on the performance and stall margin of a centrifugal compressor. The endwall (shroud) of a baseline compressor was reshaped by introducing a convex hump at a location downstream of the inducer where the flow turns from axial to radial direction.

Review of tip air injection to improve stall margin in axial compressors

Progress in Aerospace Sciences, 2019
Abstract The present paper provides a summary of investigations of the tip air injection, which has been studied for over 30 years to extend the stall margin in axial flow compressors. The review covers the design of injected parameters, understanding of stability-enhancing mechanism, application of active control, and self-recirculation based on tip

Stall Margin Improvement in a Transonic Compressor With a Casing Treatment: Flow Mechanism

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2022
Abstract A compressor casing treatment with circumferential casing grooves (CCGs) is studied in detail. The primary objective of the current paper is to unearth the main driving fluid mechanism that changes the stall margin in a transonic compressor with CCGs.

Flow Mechanism for Stall Margin Improvement Due to Circumferential Casing Grooves on Axial Compressors

Volume 5: Turbo Expo 2004, Parts A and B, 2004
A computational study is carried out to understand the physical mechanism responsible for the improvement in stall margin of an axial flow rotor due to the circumferential casing grooves. It is shown that the computational tool used predicts an increase in operating range of the rotor when casing groves are present.

Stall margin improvement of a centrifugal compressor utilizing various stepped tip gap configurations

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Journal of Power and Energy, 2014
Aerodynamic performance of a centrifugal compressor is investigated under various casing treatment configurations of stepped tip gap type, numerically. This technique is introduced as an effective method for improvement of compressor stall margin and consequent enhancement of the compressor overall performance.

Application of Casing Circumferential Grooves for Improved Stall Margin in a Transonic Axial Compressor

Volume 5: Turbo Expo 2002, Parts A and B, 2002
Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to study the fundamental flow mechanisms of circumferential grooves in the casing of a transonic compressor and their influence on compressor stall margin. Three different groove configurations were tested in a highly loaded transonic compressor.

An Experimental Investigation on the Mechanism of Stall Margin Improvement of Casing Treatment

Volume 1: Aircraft Engine; Turbomachinery, 1985
A single-rotor axial flow compressor and a two-dimensional cascade have been tested with and without casing treatment. A three-dimensional flow mechanism of the onset of rotating stall is suggested. It gives good reason to explain the mechanism of stall-margin improvement of casing treatment.

Optimized Casing Treatment to Improve Stall Margin Under Circumferential Pressure Distortion in a High-Speed Axial Flow Fan

Volume 13A: Turbomachinery — Axial Flow Fan and Compressor Aerodynamics, 2023
Abstract Aviation fans often suffer from the negative effect of distorted inflow on the stall margin. An effective way to solve the aforementioned problem is to apply casing treatment for extending the stall margin. However, previously, it was observed that casing treatments often increase the stability but with reduced efficiency ...
