Stall margin improvement in axial-flow compressors by circumferential variation of stationary blade setting angles

26th Joint Propulsion Conference, 1990
The useful operating range of the multistage, axial-flow compressor component of a gas turbine engine limits the extent of operation of that engine. Generally, the compressor stalls or surges at low flow rates and chokes at high flow rates. Thus, any improvement in the range between these compressor aerodynamic limits is normally of benefit to the ...

Improvement in Efficiency and Stall Margin of Centrifugal Blower Impeller by Multi-Objective Optimization

Volume 4: Cycle Innovations; Fans and Blowers; Industrial and Cogeneration; Manufacturing Materials and Metallurgy; Marine; Oil and Gas Applications, 2011
We investigated a multi-objective optimization technique that can control a trade-off relationship between the efficiency and the stall margin of two-dimensional impellers using only a calculation result at the design flow rate. The suction flow coefficient at the design flow rate of the impeller we designed was 0.04.

Stall Margin Improvement in Three-Stage Low Pressure Compressor by Use of Slot Type Casing Treatments

Volume 2A: Turbomachinery, 2014
The Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) has been engaged in the development of methods and technologies extending the range of stable operation for GTE axial compressors on the basis of systematic experimental and theoretical investigations of processes before and after flow disturbances for many years.

Axial Slot Casing Treatment To Improve The Stall Margin Under Circumferential Total Pressure Distortion On An Axial Flow Compressor

Proceedings of Global Power & Propulsion Society, 2022
As a typical stability enhancement method, the axial slot casing treatment (ASCT) has been verified to extend the stall margin under uniform inflow condition. In order to further investigate its stability-enhancing capability under distorted inlet conditions, a series of experimental studies were carried out on a low-speed axial flow compressor.

Stall Margin Improvement of a Single Stage Transonic Axial Flow Compressor Using Naturally Aspirated Slots

ASME 2015 Gas Turbine India Conference, 2015
This paper describes the method to improve the stall margin of transonic axial flow compressor by controlling the boundary layer on the suction surface of the rotor blade tip through natural aspiration. Aspiration slots in the compressor blade are intended to energize the flow by increasing its momentum on the suction surface.

Improving Stall Margin by Using an Air-Separator for a Variable-Pitch Axial-Flow Fan

Volume 5: Turbo Expo 2004, Parts A and B, 2004
An air-separator for extending the operating range of a variable-pitch axial-flow fan has been developed. It has a circular-are outer casing, a part of which forms the guide vane at the inlet of the air-separator. To obtain a wide operating range and to minimize penalties in terms of efficiency and noise, the influence of exposure and clearance ratios ...

Passive Controls of Tip Clearance Flow in a Transonic Compressor for Stall Margin Improvement: Common Flow Physics

Volume 13A: Turbomachinery — Axial Flow Fan and Compressor Aerodynamics, 2023
Abstract Two passive tip clearance control devices for stall margin improvement in a transonic compressor are compared in detail. The primary objective of the current study is to examine the overall performance in terms of stall margin increase and any associated performance penalties near design operation with axial casing grooves (ACGs)

Stall margin improvement and increase pressure ratio in transonic axial compressor using circumferential groove casing treatment

2019
Maximum pressure ratio and aerodynamic blades loading are the most important factors in designing axial compressor restricted by minimum airflow. The present work aims to stall margin and total pressure ratio in transonic axial compressor using circumferential groove casing treatment (CGCT).

Mechanism of radial inclined angle affecting the stall margin improvement capability of self-circulation casing treatment

Physics of Fluids
This study investigates the effects of self-circulating casing treatment with different radial inclination angles (tilted toward the rotor rotation direction) on the performance and stability of a high-load 1.5-stage transonic axial fan through multi-passage unsteady numerical simulations.

Application of a novel stall margin improvement indicator in optimizing casing treatment for a transonic compressor

Physics of Fluids
This paper presents a multi-objective design optimization of axial slot casing treatments in a 1.5 stage transonic compressor. To perform the optimization, an in-house optimization design platform is constructed using genetic algorithm and Kriging surrogate model.
