Revealing the impact of urbanization on landscape ecological risk: a case study of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science
Cities along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River (CLRYR) have highlighted human-land conflicts with their rapid urban expansion. Fully assessing the landscape ecological risk (LER) of the region and its response in the context of urbanization is of ...

Two‐Dimensional Isotropic Spatial Differentiation Through Complete Polarization Control

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This work enables two‐dimensional isotropic spatial differentiation at planar interfaces over a wide range of incident angles by extending the output polarization from linear to elliptical. The choice of incident angle can be used to balance broader spectral response at low angles and higher edge‐detection efficiency at larger angles.

Turning Light Into Matter: Programmable Microstructures Via Dose Control in Two‐Photon Polymerization

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This work augments two‐photon polymerization with point‐wise dose control, enabling structures with heterogeneous material properties such as refractive index. An open source toolbox and superior calibration methodology for the refractive index pave the way for bio‐mimicking or numerically optimized structure designs, and enhance the synergy between 3D

Multidirectional Motion Strategy of Miniature Water Surface Robot Actuated by Single Exciter

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A novel multidirectional motion strategy on the water surface based on a single exciter is proposed, and a single‐exciter single‐plate module is developed for actuation. The driving forces generation mechanism of the module is revealed from the perspective of the asymmetric surface wave field.

A note on waveless subcritical flow past a submerged semi-ellipse

open access: yes, 2013
The flow of water over a broad obstruction usually creates a downstream wave train. However, it has been shown that for some objects and discrete values of flow rate and height and length of the obstruction, there are no downstream waves - and hence zero

Multimodal Locomotion in Insect‐Inspired Microrobots: A Review of Strategies for Aerial, Surface, Aquatic, and Interfacial Motion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This review identifies key design considerations for insect‐inspired microrobots capable of multimodal locomotion. To draw inspiration, biological and robotic strategies for moving in air, on water surfaces, and underwater are examined, along with approaches for crossing the air–water interface.

Wavefront Analysis for Annular Ellipse Aperture [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The orthonormal annular ellipse Zernike polynomials are important for wavefront analysis of annular ellipse aperture (elliptical aperture with an elliptical obscuration) for their property of orthgonalization over such aperture and representing balanced ...
