Abstract In French Verse, just as in English, poets commonly group their individual lines to form larger patterns. These patterns may appear as subdivisions of the poem—as stanzas, or “strophes” as they are usually called in French; or the poem as a whole may follow a traditional pattern, or variation of it, such as sonnet form.
