This animal experimental study (144 cats) was designed to allow observation of the healing processes at the oval window following stapedectomy during the first two postoperative weeks. The first 61 animals (Series I) had no oval window cover except for a blood clot which might form spontaneously.

This article reviews the evolution of the author's stapedectomy technique from total footplate removal with single loop wire prosthesis and Gelfoam seal to small fenestra stapedectomy with platinum ribbon piston prosthesis and blood seal. The author concludes that the microdrill is effective, safe, and cost effective for performing this procedure ...

AbstractThe records of 34 children and teenagers with a conductive hearing impairment and an intact and mobile tympanic membrane have been reviewed; 20 patients had a congenital hearing impairment. Stapedectomy was performed on 13 patients with satisfactory results in 12.

AbstractThe results of stapedectomy were compared between 162 otosclerotic ears operated on using the posterior crus technique and 182 otosclerotic ears undergoing Teflon piston stapedectomy. The large fenestra technique with fascia seal to the oval window was used in all cases. Mean follow-up period was 9.6 years.

AbstractPerilymphatic fistulae have been proposed to occur most frequently on the short side of the graft in stapedectomized patients. The usual recommendation in fistula cases has been replacement of the entire prosthesis by a piston and tissue graft complex. In this case the stapedectomy had been performed, using a polyethylene Shea strut, 15 years ...

Stapedectomy Postmortem Findings
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1979Histological studies were made of 16 temporal bones of 13 subjects who had stapedectomy operations. Photographs of the prostheses in situ are a special feature of the studies. It was found that prostheses which overlap the margins of the oval window cause incomplete closure of the air-bone gaps. Fibrous adhesions were a common consequence of trauma to

Stapedotomy Versus Stapedectomy
Otology & Neurotology, 2009The postoperative results in 392 otosclerotic ears were analyzed. Stapedotomy with wire Teflon piston does not increase the risk of postoperative fistula formation in comparison to stapedectomy with tissue graft sealing. Stapedotomy with a 0.4 mm wire Teflon piston yields poorer results in the lower frequencies 3 weeks postoperatively but results as ...

Phonophobia After Stapedectomy
Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1969Phonophobia is defined as an abnormal discomfort for suprathreshold sound which does not annoy healthy individuals. This study has demonstrated that phonophobia is present in all cases after stapedectomy, and that the symptoms disappear within a year. The cause of phonophobia has been discussed, and lack of central nervous inhibition due to inactivity ...

An attempt has been made to indicate from St. Thomas' Hospital what the likely outcome of stapedectomy would be when performed by a cross-section of the speciality at differing levels of training, and to indicate the complications encountered at this centre.

The relationship between vestibular and cochlear function in stapedectomy was investigated in 722 patients (925 ears). There were no differences in hearing between patients with and without pre-operative complaints of vertigo. Post-operatively patients with long lasting vertigo obtained equally good hearing results as the others.
