Mitigating light pollution impacts on arthropods based on light‐emitting diode properties

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Light pollution from artificial light at night (ALAN) is a significant environmental problem with far‐reaching consequences for ecological systems. Recent innovations in light‐emitting diode (LED) technology may offer sustainable outdoor lighting solutions, but scientific evidence is lacking. We investigated the effects of various LED lighting

Ecogeographic patterns in a mainland-island system in Northern Europe as inferred from the rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) on Læsø island

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2018
Rove beetles (Staphylinidae) are used to explore the forces that shaped the terrestrial fauna on Læsø, a young ca. 3000 year old Danish oceanic island located in the Kattegat strait between mainland Denmark and Sweden.

Can Widely Used Methods Be Turned Into eDNA Samplers for Ground‐Dwelling Arthropods? Insights From Two Pilot Studies in West European Salt Marshes

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 2, Page 164-177, February 2026.
This study evaluates bulk and eDNA metabarcoding via suction sampling and modified pitfall traps to monitor salt marsh arthropods. Suction sampling excelled in detecting overlooked taxa, whereas pitfalls were effective for Scarabaeinae. Results underscore the importance of adapting protocols to specific taxa and habitats and highlight the effects of ...

Differences between beetle communities colonizing cattle and horse dung

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2014
Piles of fresh cow and horse dung were placed in a pasture in Dziarny in north-east Poland. The differences between the beetle communities colonizing both types of dung at various stages of succession were analyzed.

Vegetation biomass and landscape context influence web‐building spider dietary breadth in urban vacant lots

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 1, Page 126-140, February 2026.
Spider dietary breadth and overlap increased with imperviousness, suggesting that prey and spiders are concentrating in vacant lots in these landscapes. Higher vegetation biomass, which results from reduced mowing frequency, was associated with increased dietary breadth and shared prey between spiders.

Cretobrachygluta gen. nov., the first and oldest Brachyglutini in mid-Cretaceous amber from Myanmar (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae)

open access: yesActa Entomologica Musei Nationalis Pragae, 2019
A new fossil genus and species of the subfamily Pselaphinae (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), †Cretobrachygluta laurasiensis gen. et sp. nov., is described based on an exquisitely preserved specimen in mid-Cretaceous amber from northern Myanmar. The new genus

Richness and Abundance of Carabidae and Staphylinidae (Coleoptera), in Northeastern Dairy Pastures Under Intensive Grazing

open access: yesGreat Lakes Entomologist, 2018
Dairy cattle grazing has become popular to dairy farmers in the North-east looking for management schemes to cut production costs. Carabidae (ground beetles) and Staphylinidae (rove beetles) are indicators of habitat disturbances, such as drainage of ...

Tree species diversity increases the temporal stability of multitrophic forest beetle communities

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 1, January 2026.
As key members of the terrestrial food webs and vital contributors to wood decomposition, beetles play essential roles in ecosystem services but are experiencing widespread declines under climate change. While protecting and restoring forests with high tree species diversity is widely acknowledged as a nature‐based solution for climate change ...

Long-Term Developments and Biodiversity in Carabid and Staphylinid (Coleoptera: Carabidae and Staphylinidae) Fauna during the Application of Organic Fertilizers under Agroecosystem Conditions

open access: yesPolish Journal of Environmental Studies, 2018
The aim of this work was to ascertain the influence of applying various doses of organic fertilizers on the occurrence of the Carabidae and Staphylinidae families.

Thermophilization over space but not time among communities of ground‐dwelling arthropods in a desert city

open access: yesEcology, Volume 107, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Thermophilization of communities, or shifts in composition favoring more warm‐adapted species, over time and space is a common response to warming from global climate change and localized effects of land‐use change. However, the interplay between community thermophilization driven by temporal warming in global climate and spatial warming in ...
