Insects and Survival: A Review of Primary and Secondary Defense Strategies

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 7, Page 601-624, July 2026.
Based on a review of three decades of literature, insect defense mechanisms are classified into primary (I) and secondary (II) mechanisms of behavioral, morphological, and chemical nature. These mechanisms have been recorded in 22 (I) and 20 (II) orders, respectively.

Comparison of Coleoptera emergent from various decay classes of downed coarse woody debris in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA

open access: yes, 2012
Coleoptera species composition and succession in downed woody debris habitats are poorly known in eastern North America. A photoeclector emergence chamber was used to concentrate Coleoptera that emerged from various decay classes of fine and coarse woody

Predatory behaviour of some Central European pselaphine beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae) with descriptions of relevant morphological features of their heads

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2008
The Pselaphinae is a large subfamily of staphylinid beetles with a characteristic habitus and small body size. Detailed morphological and behavioural studies on these beetles are scarce.

Revision of the Oriental species of the genus Gnypetalia new status (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae), with a discussion of its phylogenetic relationships

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2005
The subgenus Gnypetalia Cameron, 1939 is redefined and raised to the genus rank. Eleven valid species are recognised in the genus, six of which are described as new: Gnypetalia armata sp. n. (Solomon Islands), G. cuccodoroi sp. n. (Philippines: Luzon), G.

Harnessing the power of machine and deep learning for transferring joint species distribution models considering the structure of biotic interactions

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 6, June 2026.
The transferability of single or joint species distribution models ((j)SDMs) depends on their ability to predict beyond the observed environmental range and to remain consistent despite shifts in biotic interactions. Transfer accuracy may be improved by recent advances in the application of deep learning that provide greater flexibility and potentially

Diversity of Resilin Incidence in the Insect Leg

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 287, Issue 6, June 2026.
Resilin incidences in the insect cuticle are commonly detected by fluorescence microscopy using the property of Resilin protein matrices to emit blue light after excitation with UV light. This indirect method produces significant background signal.

Taxonomic Species and Conservation: A Coleopterists’ View

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 53, Issue 2, June 2026.
A taxonomic species, the formal name applied to a segment of an evolving lineage, is a scientific representation named by a taxonomist. There is a dearth of taxonomists, which continues to decline, leading to the oft‐mentioned bottleneck in the formal naming of undescribed species and their revision.

Strip cropping in practice: Higher slug abundance despite a higher number of slug‐predating carabid species

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 6, June 2026.
To avoid increased slug damage in strip cropping fields in slug‐prone areas, potential slug‐source crops should be spatially separated from slug‐sensitive crops. However, an increase in slug abundance should not deter the adoption of strip cropping as higher slug damage in strip cropping systems was rarely observed by farmers.
