Novel staphylococcal species that form part of a Staphylococcus aureus-related complex: the non-pigmented Staphylococcus argenteus sp. nov. and the non-human primate-associated Staphylococcus schweitzeri sp. nov.

open access: yesInternational Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, 2015
We define two novel species of the genus Staphylococcus that are phenotypically similar to and have near identical 16S rRNA gene sequences to Staphylococcus aureus .

From plant to fabric: Environmental opportunities associated with annatto dye for sustainable development in the textile industry

open access: yesColoration Technology, EarlyView.
Abstract Natural dyes are compounds that occur naturally in several organisms and are classified based on chemical structure and application method. The literature cites several natural dyes used in industrial transformation processes. Annatto dye is used in the food industry, and its biological pigment is extracted from the annatto seed. However, this

Do aphid endosymbiotic bacteria influence parasitoid searching behaviour through changes in aphid honeydew production?

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Hamiltonella defensa infection increases honeydew production in certain aphid genotypes, potentially modifying aphid feeding behaviour. Parasitoid wasps, Aphidius ervi, are more attracted to honeydew from H. defensa‐infected aphids; though larger honeydew amounts may slightly deter searching.

Fatal spinal cord compression in a horse with chronic actinobacterial cranial nuchal bursitis

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary A 14‐year‐old warmblood gelding was managed for waxing and waning cranial nuchal bursitis for 2 years. Intensive medical and surgical management was not curative, and the patient was subjected to euthanasia after becoming acutely recumbent. Ante‐mortem and post‐mortem next generation sequencing of bursal tissue and post‐mortem conventional PCR ...

Methods for thermal inactivation of pathogens in mozzarella: a comparison between stretching and pasteurization

open access: yesArquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, 2013
This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of stretching in the reduction of pathogens when compared to milk pasteurization, the official method to ensure safe cheese production. Whole buffalo milk was contaminated with Mycobacterium fortuitum, Listeria

Newly identified properties of known pharmaceuticals and myxobacterial small molecules revealed by screening for autophagy modulators

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Autophagy is a cellular degradation process involved in, for example, immune responses to pathogens and neurodegeneration. To identify modulators of autophagy, we developed a microscopy‐based screening assay and identified previously unknown autophagy‐modulating activities in known drugs and natural products from myxobacteria and fungi.
