Staplers in Gastrointestinal Surgery

Although gastrointestinal staplers have a definite place in surgery because they are safe and effective, their distinct advantages are not clear cut. Surgeons in training should be accomplished in conventional suturing techniques before learning stapler techniques for similar anastomoses.

In Japan, we can choose 2 different types of staplers from 2 companies, namely, Tyco Healthcare Japan and Johnson & Johnson company. The staplers from each company show different characteristics.

AbstractFrom March, 1979 to November, 1980, a total of 100 consecutive patients underwent a left colectomy (45 patients) or an anterior sigmoidorectal resection (55 patients) for carcinoma (77 patients), diverticulitis (21 patients), or chronic sigmoid volvulus (2 patients). The colorectal anastomoses were fashioned by means of the EEA stapler.
