Starburst Galaxies: An Infrared Perspective

The infrared regime is a key range for studies of starburst galaxies. It contains a rich variety of tracers of the gas, dust, and star-formation activity and enables us to probe deep into dust-enshrouded star-forming regions. Selected results based on diagnostics at near and mid-infrared wavelengths are highlighted.

The starburst galaxy NGC1808: another M82?

An optical polarization map of the starburst galaxy NGC1808 shows that on kpc scales there is a coherent galactic magnetic field which follows the spiral arms on the galaxy. The inner 750pc surrounding the central region shows characteristics of a huge reflection nebula illuminated by the various hotspots within the starburst.

The Starburst Galaxy M82

Messier 82 has become a prototype for starburst galaxies, which as a class are now readily identifiable in the data from the far-infrared satellite IRAS. M82 is of particular interest because of its relative proximity, which permits the observation of individual star-related radio sources (Kronberg et al. 1985).

We first review the evidence for IR activity in interacting and merging galaxies, based on 10 and 20 µm observations.
