A brief review of IRAS galaxy redshift surveys is given. The evolution of starburst galaxies is discussed and a detailed model for source-counts from radio to X-rays is outlined. The role of starbursts in the Hubble Deep Field is explored.

Starbursts in interacting galaxies
2008We first review the evidence for IR activity in interacting and merging galaxies, based on 10 and 20 µm observations. We then investigate the ‘starbursts vs. monsters’ explanations for the energy source powering the IR activity in these galaxies.
