New distances to RAVE stars [PDF]
Probability density functions are determined from new stellar parameters for the distance moduli of stars for which the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) has obtained spectra with S/N>=10. Single-Gaussian fits to the pdf in distance modulus suffice for roughly half the stars, with most of the other half having satisfactory two-Gaussian ...

Distances of Dwarf Carbon Stars [PDF]
Abstract Parallaxes are presented for a sample of 20 nearby dwarf carbon stars. The inferred luminosities cover almost two orders of magnitude. Their absolute magnitudes and tangential velocities confirm prior expectations that some originate in the Galactic disk, although more than half of this sample are halo stars.

Star Masses and Star-Planet Distances for Earth-like Habitability [PDF]
This paper presents statistical estimates for the location and duration of habitable zones (HZs) around stars of different mass. The approach is based upon the assumption that Earth's location, and the Sun's mass, should not be highly atypical of inhabited planets.

Abstract The vastness of a clear night sky evokes for most people curiosity about the distance to the stars. There are two primary methods for estimating stellar distances – parallax and luminosity. In this study, we present a new analysis revealing a noteworthy discrepancy between these two methods.

The Distances of the Stars [PDF]
IT is quite a familiar illustration to represent the distances of the stars in terms of the light-year, but I am not aware that it has been noticed that the same figures which express in years the time light occupies in reaching the earth from a star, will also express in miles the distance of the star upon a scale of the radius vector of the ...

One star, two star, red star, blue star: an updated planetary nebula central star distance catalogue from Gaia EDR3 [PDF]
Context. Planetary nebulae (PNe) are a brief but important phase of stellar evolution. The study of Galactic PNe has historically been hampered by uncertain distances, but the parallaxes of PN central stars (CSPNe) measured by Gaia are improving the situation. Aims.

Spectroscopic distances to late-type stars [PDF]
AbstractA common approach to determining distances to stars without astrometric information is to compare stellar evolution models with parameters obtained from spectroscopic techniques. This method is routinely applied in the context of large-scale stellar surveys out to distances of several kpc.

Distance Determination of Mass-Losing Stars [PDF]
Based on the Principal Component Analysis on IRAS colors and the radio data, the distances to 183 mass-losing red giant stars were determined using the radial velocity and Oort's galactic rotation model for a zero-point calibration in the distance modulus.

Distances to Galactic OB Stars: Photometry versus Parallax [PDF]
Abstract For application to surveys of interstellar matter and Galactic structure, we compute new spectrophotometric distances to 139 OB stars frequently used as background targets for UV spectroscopy. Many of these stars have updated spectral types and digital photometry with reddening corrections from the Galactic O-Star (GOS ...
