When we wish to describe something that is extremely large, for example the national debt, we frequently say that "it runs into astronomical figures." It is true that modern astronomy deals with numbers that vastly exceed those met in daily life. Just as the number of celestial bodies in the universe is enormous, so are the distances of the stars when ...

Kinematical distances to open star clusters
Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy, 1988Kinematical distances are estimated for six open star clusters. They agree fairly well with the photometric distances. The kinematical distances cannot, at present, be estimated better than the photometric distances. When more accurate proper motion measurements become available the kinematical distances will improve considerably and may then be used ...

The subject which I hope to treat in a rather popular fashion to-night is somewhat bewildering to astronomer and layman alike because of the immensity of the quantities involved, and I shall try to make what I have to say sufficiently general in its character to avoid confusing unduly those not directly engaged in astronomical work with too great a ...

Distances Using a Supergiant Stars
1986With modern detectors it is possible to obtain spectra of individual stars in nearby galaxies. A and B supergiants are among the brightest stars in galaxies with young populations, and it has long been known that these objects have spectral characteristics that are luminosity dependent.

RR Lyrae stars as distance indicators
Vistas in Astronomy, 1986Abstract This paper attempts to review the most significant recent developments concerned with understanding the absolute magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars. Coupled with this are some new results by the author and his collaborators on Baade-Wesselink analysis of four field RR Lyrae stars using both optical and infrared observations.
