The Evolution of Massive Stars [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1997
Massive stars are the crossroads of many important astrophysical problems and thus a proper understanding of their evolution is very needed. They are the main sources of UV radiation, by heating the interstellar dust they produce the far-IR luminosities of galaxies.

The evolution of wide binary stars [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2010
We study the orbital evolution of wide binary stars in the solar neighborhood due to gravitational perturbations from passing stars. We include the effects of the Galactic tidal field and continue to follow the stars after they become unbound. For a wide variety of initial semi-major axes and formation times, we find that the number density (stars per ...

The dynamical evolution of Be star disks [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2010
AbstractWe present a novel theoretical tool to analyze the dynamical behaviour of a Be disk fed by non-constant decretion rates. It is mainly based on the computer code HDUST, a fully three-dimensional radiative transfer code that has been successfully applied to study several Be systems so far, and the SINGLEBE code that solves the 1D viscous ...

Effects of chronic browsing on life‐history traits of an irruptive large herbivore population

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study aimed to determine the relationship between diet quality, body mass, and size (hind foot length), and female reproduction and sought to identify the mechanism by which high density under severe food limitations is maintained. Our results demonstrated that sika deer introduced to Nakanoshima Island have maintained high densities through high ...

Combining transient dynamics and logistic‐asymptotic growth to study the recovery of two seabird populations after rat eradication

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examines the demographic dynamics of two seabird populations on Tromelin Island, 15 years after the eradication of brown rats. The results indicate that these populations are in good health and are expected to continue growing until breeding sites are saturated in about a century.
