Imaging the Surfaces of Late-Type Stars

1995
We discuss the prospects for resolving the disks of red-giants and Mira variables with the VLT and the VLTI. We also describe infrared aperture-masking observations with the NTT, from which we have measured angular diameters of 50 mas for R Dor (M8 III) and 44mas for W Hya (Mira variable).

Stellar evolution and late type stars

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1995
The M, S and C stars may be placed in an evolutionary sequence on the basis of direct observation of the spectroscopic transitions on the AGB of rich intermediate-age clusters in the Magellanic Clouds, but some S and C stars cannot be accounted for in this way.

Outer Atmospheres of Late-Type Stars

1981
I will attempt to summarize our limited understanding of the outer atmospheres of red giants by describing recent important observational results concerning chromospheres and coronae in late-type stars and how red giants fit into the emerging picture.

Magnetic activity in late-type stars

1999
High resolution spectroscopic techniques are used to investigate the magnetic topology of the young, rapidly rotating star, AB Dor. Doppler images of AB Dor are produced using the Li I 6708 Å line and compared to images produced using Ca I and Fe i lines. A Li abundance of 2.9±0.3 dex is measured using LTE profile synthesis.
