An Overview on STATCOM

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
At present, the power system plays a vital role in China's national economy, therefore, power indicator problem of the system attracting much attention, reactive power and voltage as one of the light elements give enough weight, the stability of the system is not to be neglected, static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is a member that has high ...

STATCOM ETO Failure Analysis

2006 CES/IEEE 5th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference, 2006
Emitter Turn-Off (ETO) Thyristor based STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM) is one of the promising Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) technologies, and it is gaining more popularity in utility grids. A 4.5 MVA ETO based STATCOM failed two ETO devices as over-voltage protection triggered AC connector and disconnected the STATCOM from AC grid ...

STATCOM Control Strategies

2014
This chapter reviews the control systems used to enable STATCOMs to carry out their most important task, which is to deliver reactive power to the electrical grid. Later on, other control systems designed for more advanced applications are discussed, such as compensating the nonlinear loads.

Overview of STATCOM technologies

2004 IEEE International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation, Restructuring and Power Technologies. Proceedings, 2004
Abstract: /spl plusmn/20Mvar STATCOM indicates that China is the 4/sup th/ country to develop STATCOM in the world. This paper introduces the development of STATCOM particularly in China. Topologies of STATCOM are discussed, and the cascade multilevel configuration is given in details. Power valves such as GTO, IGBT, IGCT, IEGT used in STATCOM are also

PV Solar System Control as STATCOM (PV-STATCOM) for Power Oscillation Damping

IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, 2019
This paper presents a novel control of photovoltaic (PV) solar system as a FACTS device STATCOM, termed PV-STATCOM, for power oscillation damping (POD) in transmission systems. In the proposed control, as soon as power oscillations due to a system disturbance are detected, the solar farm discontinues its real power generation function very briefly (few

Quadratic Linearization of STATCOM

2018 IEEE 8th Power India International Conference (PIICON), 2018
Control of STATCOM is important for the stability of power system to which it is connected. Since STATCOM dynamics is nonlinear, various control strategies have been proposed including feedback linearization which involves internal dynamics. In this paper, we propose to quadratic linearize the STATCOM equations and the problem of internal dynamics does

Control of Multilevel STATCOMs

2014
Control strategies suitable for multilevel STATCOMs are reviewed in this chapter. First of all, the models are systematically deducted and especial emphasis is given to the dynamic and steady state analysis in order to facilitate the study of the control techniques.

Voltage flicker compensation using STATCOM

2009 4th IEEE Conference on Industrial Electronics and Applications, 2009
Voltage flicker is considered as one of the most severe power quality problems (especially in loads like electrical arc furnaces) and much attention has been paid to it lately. Due to the latest achievements in the semiconductors industry and consequently the emergence of the compensators based on voltage source converters, FACTS devices have been ...

Dissipativity-based control for STATCOM

PowerTech Budapest 99. Abstract Records. (Cat. No.99EX376), 2003
This paper describes a dissipativity-based approach for the dynamic control of FACTS devices based on voltage source inverters (VSI), such as STATCOM and UPFC. The main goal of the approach is to achieve the AC current and DC voltage regulation by shaping the energy of the closed-loop system, similarly to Lyapunov techniques.
