The Influence of Surface Temperature on the Coefficient of Static Friction

The Physics Teacher, 2019
Friction is one of the common forces that affect our everyday life and one of the oldest problems studied in physics. An interpretation of its nature is included in all general physics courses, in both high school and college. The desire and need to better understand it guided a long list of scientists who devoted themselves to the study of friction ...

Measurement of static friction coefficient between flat surfaces

Wear, 1996
Abstract An experimental device, called the centrifugal friction apparatus (CFA), was developed which is capable of measuring the static coefficient of friction, μ, between flat surfaces with very low normal forces. Experiments were performed with the CFA using the polished surface of n-type arsenic doped silicon wafers to investigate static ...

A measurement of the coefficient of static friction of human long bones

Surface Technology, 1985
Abstract The coefficient of static friction for bone-to-bone contacting surfaces has been measured. Unembalmed human cadaveric tibial and femoral bones were cut with three types of surgical saw, two power driven and one hand held, and the bone-to-bone static friction was determined using an in vitro shear method.

Determination of the static friction coefficient from circular motion

Physics Education, 2014
This paper describes a physics laboratory exercise for determining the coefficient of static friction between two surfaces. The circular motion of a coin placed on the surface of a rotating turntable has been studied. For this purpose, the motion is recorded with a high-speed digital video camera recording at 240 frames s−1, and the videos are analyzed

A Simple Lab Exercise to Determine the Coefficient of Static Friction

The Physics Teacher, 2006
This paper describes a quick, simple, and reliable physics lab exercise for determining the coefficient of static friction between common materials. Only a meter stick, a protractor, and samples of the materials are needed. A mathematical derivation is given to show why the method works.

The Effect of Polish Maintenance on Static Coefficient of Friction

2004
The static coefficient of friction (μs) of polishes, measured by the James machine and ASTM D2047, provides a measure of the inherent slip resistance of the polish film. When in use, polish films are invariably modified by traffic and routine maintenance procedures that could, theoretically, change the inherent slip resistance of the film.
