Cosmic statistics of statistics [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1999
The errors on statistics measured in finite galaxy catalogs are exhaustively investigated. The theory of errors on factorial moments by Szapudi & Colombi (1996) is applied to cumulants via a series expansion method. All results are subsequently extended to the weakly non-linear regime.

Evaluating the Minimum Number of Earthquakes in Empirical Site Response Assessment: Input for New Requirements for Microzonation in the Swiss Building Codes

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
Site-specific hazard analyses and microzonation are important products for densely populated areas and facilities of special risk. The empirical amplification function is classically estimated using the standard spectral ratio (SSR) approach.

Stochastic modelling, Bayesian inference, and new in vivo measurements elucidate the debated mtDNA bottleneck mechanism

open access: yeseLife, 2015
Dangerous damage to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can be ameliorated during mammalian development through a highly debated mechanism called the mtDNA bottleneck. Uncertainty surrounding this process limits our ability to address inherited mtDNA diseases.

STYLOMETRY: STATISTICAL APPROACH INTO FILM STYLE

open access: yesCapture, 2019
So far the study of cinema is still dominated by the use of a Narrative Analysis approach, where its weaknesses do not have empirical evidences, so the resulting analysis is assumptions which then followed by a text debate.

Low-Frequency Wind Energy Variability in the Continental Contiguous United States

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
Wind energy is characterized by exceptionally large power fluctuations at the single energy facility level, that remain significant also considering the average of the many different energy facilities connected to the same grid.

Statistical Intervals, Not Statistical Significance [PDF]

open access: yesSignificance, 2019
AbstractConvincing practitioners of the inadequacy of significance testing can employ a two-step approach. First, explain the difference between statistical significance and practical importance. Then, at least in many situations, use an appropriate statistical interval to quantify the statistical uncertainty.
