The Statistical Method

ARTICLES in the medical literature increasingly present statistical tests of significance. Too frequently one has the feeling that these have been added only after bitter correspondence between the author, the editors and a consulting statistician. Used in this way, tests of significance add little to the report of an investigation.

Statistical methods in learning

In this paper we describe an ESPRIT project known as ‘Stat-Log’ whose purpose is the comparison of learning algorithms. We give a brief summary of some of the algorithms in the project: linear and quadratic discriminant analysis, k nearest neighbour, CART, backpropagation, SMART, ALLOC80 and Pearl's polytree algorithm.
